(Al-Mutamar) – The Lawyers' Union has not approved the request presented by the board formed in Amman to defend Saddam Hussein or the request by Lebanese lawyer Bushra al-Khalil. A Union source said any demand presented by an Arab lawyer would be rejected because, according to Iraqi law, the home country of an Arab lawyer must accept Iraqi lawyers to plead for defendants there. Moreover, no Iraqi lawyer has yet presented a request to defend Saddam. Meanwhile, an informed source in the special criminal court to try Saddam said the court, the Lawyers' Union, and the Ministry of Justice were considering the appointment of an Iraqi lawyer to plead for Saddam.
