WASHINGTON (AFP) - President George W. Bush (news - web sites)'s description of recent events in Iraq (news - web sites) is "bland to the point of dishonesty," the Washington Post charged, in a blistering editorial accusing the president of failing to admit the worsening situation in Iraq.


"His description of Iraq is bland to the point of dishonesty," the leading daily wrote, noting that Bush said Friday that, "despite ongoing acts of violence," Iraq has a strong prime minister, a national council and that it will hold elections in January.


"Not only has Mr. Bush not said how, or whether, he intends to respond to the worsening situation -- he doesn't really admit it exists," the Post said.


"This duck-and-cover strategy may have its political advantages, but it is also deeply irresponsible and potentially dangerous," the Post wrote.

So George Dubya is sitting in a meeting in Istanbul last Monday when he gets a note from Condi Rice that says "Iraq is sovereign.". This note was referring to the transfer of power from the United States of America to our brand new hand-picked Iraqi leadership.

Dubya scribbled a phrase on the note, "Let Freedom Reign!" and then shook hands with Tony Blair, his only real ally. I have seen this little farce several times on the tube. The note was even featured on the front page of the NY Times.

Did it seem a little staged to you? Didn't it have a little "Give me Liberty or give me death" quality about it?

OK, here's why it could not have happened: First, there is no way in the world that a C-student from Crawford ,Texas, could extemporaneously come up with the phrase "Let Freedom Reign!" Even if he could there is no way George could spell reign. Or know what "sovereign" means for that matter.

Had this note been handed to George without the rehearsal here is what he might have said:

I'll have the veal.

Iraq is what now?

I thought it was "I" before "E" except after "C".

If Cheney had received the note he might have said "about f***ing time". Big Dick has been a very nasty VP lately. In case you missed it, he told our own distinguished Senator Patrick Leahy to "go*** yourself."

When a power or entity reigns, it rules with unquestioned authority. How the fuck can decentralization and liberty somehow consolidate and enslave?

Besides the fact that it's an idiotic misquote of "let freedom ring" from a patriotic song, it's clunky, oxymoronic and just plain moronic.

Only minds like this can come up with things like "Freedom is on the March". Yep, freedom's on the march, crushing and killing everything in its way, and you can hear the goosestepping jackbooted phalanx from here.

Every bit of imagery these thugs come up with is expressed in violence and subjugation. Everything's a war on this and a crusade against that. Bow down in awe at their oh-so-big power, peon, and submit while you can.

The simps who find this appealing are loathesome in their hero-worship of brutes, and the whole thing just reeks of some kind of sadistic sports team affiliation. Barf-o-matic.

The fact that Bush can't openly admit that he is making mistakes and "stays the course" is evident in that statement.

This week will be a test for that outlook. When he has to go to the UN to ask for help with the security of these countries for their elections, he will have to either humble himself, or he will have to "stay the course" of all the speeches he has been giving about his choice of seeking world opinion and support for his actions.

This is where the rubber meets the road. If he thumbs his nose and things go south for those elections, then the world will hang that defeat squarely on him. If he changes course and actually admits that he needs their help, then he has blown his "steadfast and courageous" moniker.

Either way, that statement pretty much sums up his "policy" for me. Even when he is wrong, he can't adjust his course.

At least that's how I read it.
