Brazil Creates Most Jobs Since 1992 in August as Economy Grows

ept. 21 (Bloomberg) -- Brazilian President Luiz
Inacio Lula da Silva said the country created the
most jobs since 1992 in August as an economic
expansion led companies to hire more people.

About 230,000 jobs were created in August, not
including maids and other informal workers, Lula
told journalists at the United Nations. In the first
eight months of the year, Brazil created a record
1.47 million jobs in the formal labor market, more
than twice the number created in the same period
of 2003.

Lula said the pace of job creation shows that
government efforts to rein in inflation, restore
investor confidence and spur economic growth
since taking office in January 2003 are paying off.

He's restraining spending while promoting economic growth to reduce the large debt burden. Once the debt is reduced from the crippling levels it is at now, he can then pursue an aggressive social agenda.

8. not to be a spoilsport....

but the rate of deforestation in Amazonia has also spiked recently. If there is a direct correlation between economic growth and the destruction of Amazonia then it's a losers game in the long run. My enthusiasm for Lula has been dampened; I suppose that frittering away natural resources is more politically feasible than redistributing some of the wealth in order to improve the lot of Brazil's masses.

9. The economic impact of the Amazon region is (for now) negligible

The environmental damage is pure negligence, and our numbers aren't affected by that (except in the long term of course, by having less potential natural resources to be exploited rationally).

In short, it's two completely different issues. The good economic numbers are mostly from "urban" factors (manufacturing, commerce, exports etc)
