Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has made a surprise visit to Damascus for talks with his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad on regional issues, including Syria's role in Lebanon.
Their discussions Wednesday came one day after Arab foreign ministers voiced support for Lebanon's right to determine its political future. Meeting in Cairo, the 22-member Arab League declined to voice support for a United Nations resolution implicitly urging the withdrawal of Syrian troops from Lebanon.
Egyptian and Syrian officials say the Mubarak visit lasted just a few hours. They say the two presidents agreed on the need for Lebanon's sovereignty to be respected.
Syria maintains several thousand troops in Lebanon, a holdover from a much larger contingent it sent during the Lebanese civil war.
