Paris - A vaccine against hepatitis B was plunged into controversy on Tuesday after a US study said it found a statistical link between the jab and the crippling disease multiple sclerosis (MS).
France said it would refer the study for consideration by Europe's drug-safety watchdog, but the World Health Organisation (WHO) discounted the study as flawed and insisted there was no need to raise any alarm about the vaccine.
The research, published in the September issue of US journal Neurology, trawled through a database compiled from the records of British family doctors to identify 163 adults who had been diagnosed with MS, and to compare their vaccination history with that of 1 604 group of healthy individuals.
