WASHINGTON - Republican congressional leaders reported no breakthroughs Monday in overcoming obstacles to passing extensions of three popular tax cuts in time for the November elections.
Republicans are struggling to resolve questions over whether the extensions should last two years or five years. They also are looking at how to link passage of popular tax relief for families with a corporate tax bill to replace an export subsidy ruled illegal by the World Trade Organization (news - web sites).
The tax cuts for individuals and families are due to expire at the end of this year.
House Speaker Dennis Hastert and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist huddled with Ways and Means Committee Chairman William Thomas and Senate Finance Committee Chairman Charles Grassley.
