Six weeks before Election Day, a survey of likely voters gives Maine's Democratic congressional candidates leads over their Republican challengers.
The telephone poll, conducted between Sunday and Tuesday, shows Rep. Michael Michaud leading Republican Brian Hamel in the 2nd District, 55 percent to 34 percent. Seven percent chose another candidate and 4 percent were undecided.
In southern Maine's 1st District, four-term incumbent Rep. Tom Allen has a 34-point lead over Charles Summers, 64 percent to 30 percent. Six percent were undecided or chose another candidate.

Results showing strong support for Michaud could augur well for Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry in the 2nd District, according to Jim Melcher, political scientist at the University of Maine at Farmington.
