Washington fears US terror attack ahead of presidential election

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US authorities fear an attack by Al-Qaeda terrorists between now and the November 2 presidential election, top US officials said.

The officials fear an attack similar to March attack in Madrid ahead of Spanish elections, which resulted in voters throwing out the conservative government of Jose Maria Aznar and sweeping Socialist Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero into office.

"We received threat information in the spring about Al-Qaeda's intention to hit us before the election," a senior US Justice Department official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"We've received no intelligence that contradicts our initial intelligence on Al-Qaeda's intention to attack us before the election," said a senior FBI official at the same event.

The officials also said they had no specific information of a target or the date of an attack.

Where and when did they find this new information out?

Never mind, they said something, therefore they are lying. It's the law.

6. A terrorist attack would ensure a Bush win, IMO.
Bush and Cheney are bound to have thought of that, as well. Which is why they keep bringing up the possibility; it's the next best thing.

If they didn't think a terrorist attack would help them, the administration would keep mum about the possibility.

19. rubbish
"...which resulted in voters throwing out the conservative government of Jose Maria Aznar and sweeping Socialist Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero into office. "

1. they can't know how many people changed their votes in Spain due to the attack there.

2. they ignore the wide-spread protests in Spain prior to the US-led invasion of Iraq; which, in my mind at least, indicates Aznar would likely have been removed from power with or without the bombings.

Typical US propaganda.

24. Don't forget, Ken, that the Spanish conservative gov tried to pin
the bombings (with no evidence) on Spanish separatists, which truly angered the Spanish public when the public found out that the gov really knew it was a Muslim bunch all along. That's why the socialists were voted in. The public was lied to and they did not like it. Kinda refreshing, ain't it??

20. Ain't gonna happen.
Nobody can predict for certain how U.S. voters would react to an attack before the election--including al Qaeda. Some voters would slavishly cling to Bush, others would call for Bush's head for not protecting the country. Neither is a sure thing. Therefore the odds of jarring the election outcome in one preferred direction are roughly the same as jarring it in the opposite direction.

If they just want to create bloody chaos they know they can do that anytime and election time is less than optimal because the security guard is way up.

Won't happen.

33. No, it won't ... UNLESS ...
the plan is simply to institute martial law and halt the elections altogether. That would be a damn bold move, but not impossible to imagine them trying.

Methinks this is setup and that what'll actually happen is they'll THWART a major terra-attack right before the election. It'll be phony and trumped up as hell, but the MW's will trumpet their chimpy as the Great Savior of 'Murka, and he'll be 'swept back into office on a popular wave of support'... that will also give cover to their BBV plans, make them a WHOLE lot less suspect...

They've been talking about this for so long now, you HAVE to think something is up. I think Spain was a dry run, Turkey was retaliation for not letting us launch from there, and Bali was to scare Australia into sending troops.

IOW, I believe AlQaeda=PNAC, pure and simple.

UBL=CIA, always and forever...

21. The majority of Spanish voters opposed Aznar's policies
...before the attacks.

The assumption in this article is propaganda pure and simple. Madison avenue calls it unbranded advertising.

A right wing conservative who ignored the wishes of the voters got canned. It had to be the terrorist attacks. Yeah, that's the ticket.

European countries who have experienced decades of fascist electoral tactics are wise to this crap. Unfortunately, Americans are still naive.

a vote for Kerry would result in more terra attacks.

So if there's an attack before the election, wouldn't that mean Glorious Leader can't keep us safe either???

31. I'd say it'd be a wash
I think it would just harden both sides' opinions. Let's face it--true undecideds are very few and far between these days, and it would take something on a 9/11 scale at this point to change very many minds in either direction. I would guess that in reaction to such an event, those true undecideds would swing in either direction with equal probability.

Let's hope we never get to find out.

My $.02...

36. UTTER UNADULTERED CRAP
Not only were the terror attacks in Spain NOT responsible for Aznar's butt getting kicked, but if the "terrorists" want to get rid of Bush, they'll attack elsewhere--like IRAQ, where it's actually having some impact!

They know the situation as well as anyone does--that the administration believes that another terror attack would re-elect Bush. That's why all you see on the media lately is about how women 18-49, or whatever, are MOST worried about TERROR. THIS IS ALL BEING SET UP so they can stage another attack and STEAL the election again and say that * was re-elected because they people were AFRAID. Either that, or they will be able to declare martial law and shut the elections down.

Either way, I figure WE ARE ALL SAFER IF THEY KEEP INFLATING THE POLLS IN HIS FAVOR.
