Can somebody in the mainstream USA media take a little closer look at Veneuela?
The mainstream US media seems to be engaging in the groundwork preparing public opinion for sanctions and a possible US invasion of Venezuela. There are persistent reports trying to link the Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to guerrillas in Colombia and to terrorism in general. Although nobody has come up with reliable evidence of any such accusation, the media so far seems to be happy playing along with the unsubstantiated 'reports.'
After the Iraqi experience ... where the US government did an excellent job convincing the public that Saddam Hussein had WMD, I'm praying to God that somebody does something soon to avoid another 'intelligence failure.' There's nobody in the US mainstream media who makes any attempt to be balanced with regard to what is being reported about Venezuela.
All the news reports are 'mysteriously' aligned with US government foreign policy of eliminating 'tyranny' and 'terrorism' around the world ... the problem is that it is only US government officials who get to define what 'tyranny' is and its geographic location.
By the 'strangest' coincidence, most of the countries that have been identified as having 'tyrannical authorities' are developing countries capable of producing large quantities of oil. The ambiguous position of the Bush administration with regard to Iran and North Korea is very telling. North Korea says “We have nuclear weapons,” The reaction of the US Secretary of Defense is “We are not sure if they have.”
Iran, on the other hand, indicates that is developing nuclear power to produce electricity and now the country is under the threat of a US attack that will happen any moment the US State Department deigns to “put it on the agenda.” It is time for the US public to demand both sides of the story.
