NY Daily News: Can Bush stop his long slide?

WASHINGTON - Is the troubled Bush presidency prematurely cooked? Many prominent Republicans have reluctantly begun to embrace that apocalyptic conclusion.

"The country has given up on him," said GOP consultant Ed Rollins, echoing several other Republican sources, including longtime Bush confidants and party officials. "It's too late to turn it around."

A Fox News/Opinion Dynamics Poll reported last week that with 34 months left in Bush's tenure, 53% of the country believes he is already a lame duck.

For Bush to reverse his sagging political fortunes, however, even loyalists agree he and his underachieving staff must perform more crisply - and the Iraq intervention must show significant improvement.

2. It's not his staff that's to blame but having one party rule

with no conscience. They really are like a group of frat boys on an extended destructive binge.

3. One party rule with a failed ideology, too

After all, if their ideas actually worked in real life, he wouldn't be sliding into well deserved oblivion in the polls.

GOP fiscal ideology has never worked, does not work, will never work, no matter how long we try it. This is something the conservative Democrats need to realize. You can't tinker with it, tweak it up, put a bandaid on it, or try to fix it. You have to junk it.

If the Democratic leadership ever realizes this, they will be unstoppable.

4. I agree absolutely,

I just refuse to give this administration that out. They knew going in that market fundamentalism would cause great harm to average citizens and they still adhere to it despite the negative impact on their fan base. That makes them criminals, not idealogues. And, the democrats who espouse similar pro-business b.s. fully intend to continue industry enabling policies with a we-feel-your-pain veneer and a moderate label.

Edit to add: it DOES have to be junked but with constant campaigning and the need for money, industry rules these days.
