"Palin all attitude and image to Biden's facts and focus"
Baltimore Sun

Sarah Palin did better in her debate with Joe Biden than many people surely expected. But then, anything short of a meltdown would have exceeded expectations given the last couple of weeks she’s had on TV at the expense of Saturday Night Live performer Tina Fey and CBS anchorwoman Katie Couric.

And as strange and unpredictable as viewer reactions can be to what they see on TV, it is hard to imagine any rational human being not thinking Joe Biden delivered one of the most solid and winning debate performances in recent presidential history.

Yet, in the end, the question is whether facts, reason and logic can win out on TV over attitude and image, which is what Palin’s performance was all about.

1. What really burns my britches
is that this woman actually believes she is VP qualified. It is unbelievable how arrogant that assumption is. If she was asked to vote for someone like herself, you can bet she would say, "no way, that lady isn't qualified"...

7. Her presence is an offence to profession women everywhere..
If any woman conducted herself in a presentation/interview
as Palin has, we'd either be fired or relegated to the typing pool.

The media owes Hillary Clinton a huge apology for the crap
they gave her; Palin makes Hillary look like a combination
of Mother Theresa, Marie Curie and Doris Kearns Goodwin.

And I am appalled by the adoration of the press,
and the republican base for this sorry excuse of a candidate.

If Palin were a Democratic candidate,
she'd be laughed off the stage.

This is one of the biggest cons of the century,
and a huge mockery of the women's movement.

2. Yes, all sizzle and no steak.
If you take away the lies and distortions, the demeaning and marginalizing of others, the stonewalling of questions and the cheerleading, what've you got?

4. that's it though!! she blatantly lied more than once. they keep doing that
and get away with it!! she didn't make me feel any better about her being a heartbeat away from the presidency. i admit, i do not agree with her ideas of virtually anything, but then again, i don't really know what they are except what has been her record in alaska. the fact that she is being buffered by being the vp and not the presidential candidate frustrates me. the vp should be someone you would be able to see as president also. and she doesn't. she didn't even get the name of the general in afghanistan right! wtf!

9. Because LYING does NOT matter. Impeach Bush for lying? No. So now, nobody is afraid to lie.
Nothing is going to happen.
NOTHING.

Lying will not bring consequences.

They don't bring up Bill Clinton any more, do they? The whole "he lied" line is DEAD, vanished, gone.

Once Bush succeeded in lying, and lying, and lying -- with nobody calling him on it, or even investigating it.... all bets were off.

LIE AWAY... the AMERICAN PEOPLE DO NOT GIVE A DAMN.

10. That is absolutely it.
No one can make rational decisions without facts and no one has the time and resources to gather all the facts first-hand (or the security clearance). We have to have reliable sources. But...

It takes more time to debunk a lie than it takes to make one up and tell it. So anyone who tells lies in quick succession can stay ahead of anyone interested in the truth.

The only defense against this is to remember who the liars are (once they've been caught in a lie) and stop listening to them.

But we don't stop listening. They come on the air the next week and start it all up again. No history. No accountability. No punishment.

Nothing to stop them from lying again and again.

Until we solve that problem, we will not solve any of the others.

Lying to the public -- in a substantive way, like starting a war on false info -- should be a higher crime than murder.

11. Yep! And silly, naive me... my jaw dropping kept yelling at that crap coming out of McCain's mouth
about "not phoning it in" when I'd seen the video clips of him phoning it in.

And his "I suspended my campaign" and he didn't.

And his "I stopped my ads" and he didn't.

I'm all upset because doesn't he know we can get all this on YouTube?

BUT... it came to me that all my blustering and upset and tension about him getting away with all these lies --- my shock DOESN'T MATTER.

No one is going to call him on it -- not any of it.

He will NEVER face the consequences -- in fact, many people will believe him.

3. That's my only concern
Biden's superiority in the debate could be glossed over by the "news" that Palin didn't have a meltdown. This reminds me of the Chris Rock bit where he talks about people taking credit for not going to jail. Now we know who the "low expectation havin' muthafucka" is.

You're right, any reasonable viewer judging the debate objectively would see that this was a slam dunk for Biden on depth of knowledge, and focus on the issue at hand, not to mention having credible responses to attacks from the opponent. I'm worried about the country if undecided voters used last night as a reason to vote for McCain.

8. one good bit of news this am
in Portland, ME, they did some coffeeshop interviews.

First person they interviewed, "Palin obviously was reciting rehearsed answers. It's a good thing she spent a few weeks in boot camp; she needed it. Biden was clearly a far, far superior debator."

Newsperson, "So what did you tell us before we turned on the cameras?"

"Oh, yeah. I'm a lifelong member of the republican party. I've voted republican my entire life. NO WAY I'm voting republican this election."

I turned off the tv immediately. Didn't want to lose my happy, happy mood!

13. The Repugs KNOW that in 'Murka Style trumps Substance every time.
I don't have tv, but I think Palin feels very familiar to many Americans who sit in front of a television for 30 hours a week. They see her every day as their local tv anchors, as the actors in their favorite shows.
