Gun Nut + Unemployed + Glenn Beck/NRA = Dead Policemen

There are connections between the Pittsburgh rampage earlier today, which left three policemen dead, and the kind of wingnuttery as represented by the NRA and Glenn Beck. Sure, the man responsible is clearly a fruitcake, but he was worried about the false and rabid rumor spread by the NRA that Obama was going to take his guns.

I'm a Stingo fan, a regular reader, and a gun owner. I'm not so sure that gun ownership and nutwing absolutely have to go together. My family are all strong Democrats, all rural, mostly Appalachian, many hunt for food, and so, many are also gun owners.

When I lived in the city, I never had the need to own guns, so I didn't. Now that I live out in the country in a very rural county that has a very understaffed sheriff's department, yes, I do.

My partner has a service dog upon when he depends for his mobility and freedom to move about in the world. She is a very gentle creature we raised from a 6-week-old puppy, one we regard as tenderly as we would our flesh-and-blood daughter. She alerts for impending seizures and then if he has a grand mal, remains with him and helps him to center. Due to her training and just because of her gentle disposition, she is defenseless against the creatures that might come upon her out here in the country. It is my responsibility not only to care for her, but to defend her. She can't poop in the house, obviously.

I live in an area where there are raccoons and wild pigs. A buck in season can decide that anything in his way might be due for a kicking to death. Any of these creatures can easily tear up, if not kill a dog -- especially one who has had aggressiveness trained out of her. Do you really think that yelling "shoo!" or waving a stick would change the mind of any of these creatures if they decided to attack my baby? Get a clue; they won't.

There are more sides to any story than just one. I'm a very gentle person, one who abhors violence. But I was raised in the country and live in the country. There are real dangers out here and I have a real responsibility to both my partner and his service partner. She is irreplaceable -- seizure alert dogs don't grow on trees. You can't train the behavior; a dog will only volunteer it and the human has to be astute enough to catch it.

She is a gift, a grant of freedom that my beloved didn't have before she came along and won't have if I don't take care of her.

I hope you understand that.

A nice little example of the anti-gun crowd being dishonest, and manipulative in their campaign. Just like the right-wing spin machine, the anti-gun crowd latches on to one or two examples, then tries with Hannity-like finesse to equate them with all gun owners. This isn't addressed solely to the author of this post, but to a large contingent who believe that if the association is presented in such a dishonest way, that others here will be too stupid to recognize it, and will succumb not to the argument and it's merits, but to avoid the label of "NUT". Once recognized for what it is, it is then relegated to the lost bin of idiocy, and only strengthens the anti-gun crowd's opponent's resolve. If they ever come to their senses, and come to grips with the reality that their is a fundamental, and vast difference between responsible gun owners, and the "gun nuts" out there, they will at least be able to say they're being honest. Something that is sorely lacking in their arguments to this point. Till then, there will be no "debate" on the issue, but a continuation of what we are experiencing on this board right now. Thanks.

There's the problem with gun nuts, ignoring the facts on the ground in order to protect the right of their brethren to shoot others. Yeah, this guy is your brother in fighting for unlimited rights to bear arms. Please face that fact.

10. Today was a horrific day here

I heard today that an officer hasn't been killed in the line of duty here in like 18 years - and that that was a traffic accident. This city is in shock.

It wasn't actually the shooters myspace which has been deleted, but his friends that has been quoted in the media - the one that he called during the shootout I think - that has all of the anti-semitic shit on his site and a recommended reading list that includes The Turner Diaries.
