By Marshall Helmberger
... If Coleman’s argument is accepted, virtually every state or national election is constitutionally invalid. By definition, any election involving humans will experience mistakes, judgment calls, or differing interpretations of the laws governing elections in Minnesota or in any other state. That means any election could face the exact same challenge that Coleman apparently intends to make. You couldn’t have a presidential election at all, because each state has its own election laws, which differ dramatically from state to state. If every vote and voter has to be treated exactly the same, that’s an untenable situation ...
In the end, Coleman’s far-fetched legal theory does provide one silver lining for Democrats — it may well help to reveal the illegitimacy of the Bush v. Gore decision, which is the subtext to Coleman’s claims.
... By working to deny Minnesotans .. representation in the Senate, Coleman is actively undermining the interests of Minnesotans, and for that he thoroughly discredits himself and his GOP financial backers.
As has become increasingly clear, Coleman lost his re-election bid. He should grow up and get over it.
