President George W. Bush’s increasingly erratic behavior and wide mood swings has the halls of the West Wing buzzing lately as aides privately express growing concern over their leader’s state of mind.
In meetings with top aides and administration officials, the President goes from quoting the Bible in one breath to obscene tantrums against the media, Democrats and others that he classifies as “enemies of the state.”

Worried White House aides paint a portrait of a man on the edge, increasingly wary of those who disagree with him and paranoid of a public that no longer trusts his policies in Iraq or at home.

“It reminds me of the Nixon days,” says a longtime GOP political consultant with contacts in the White House. “Everybody is an enemy; everybody is out to get him. That’s the mood over there.”

In interviews with a number of White House staffers who were willing to talk off the record, a picture of an administration under siege has emerged, led by a man who declares his decisions to be “God’s will” and then tells aides to “fuck over” anyone they consider to be an opponent of the administration.

Sure, it could all be true.

But there are clues in this article which show its speculative (rather than authoritative) nature.

To say Powell has "growing doubts" about Iraq indicates the author believes Powell was in favor of the invasion. Most experts know this to be false.

... I have had a few dealings with Doug Thompson over the years, and he is as honest as the day is long. Sure, he's a conservative, and he took some choice (but always articulate) pot-shots at Clinton five years ago in CHB, but I can also tell you that he has very reliable sources on both sides of the aisle. It's also worth noting that thia former hero of the FReepers has become a target of their hatred and loathing for a series of articles and reports that cast Dear Leader in a less-than-flattering light.

But I certainly have no trouble believing the gist of this story. * has shown himself repeatedly to be that most dangerous of creatures, a not very intelligent person who is absolutely sure "God is on his side". I have had newborn Christians tell me that God guided their hand while they were under a car feeling for a wrench with absolute solemnity. Bush is the same way - he got "saved" and since he is now heavenly inspired anyone who doesn't agree with his view is highly suspicious and probably an emissary of the devil.

I have been pretty much apolitical since the Nixon years - voting, but not out protesting or marching. This guy and his henchmen scare me right to the bone....

At some time in the past, according to both redacted and redacted the President suffered what one of his aides called "a very minor seizure" and as a result of this, the President has a very difficult time following any unscripted conversations.

For this reason, his staff carefully and aggressively protect the President from "unexpected" questions that he is not capable of answering."

The President takes oral medication at least twice a day according to redacted because of an unspecified "indisposition' and this subject is strictly off limits for any casual staff conversation."

At one point during a staff conference, the President stood up and began to speak in an unknown language.

Mr. Rove was able to stop the President and get him to resume his seat. It was reported by redacted that for a period of time (about fifteen minutes) after this incident, the President appeared to be 'somewhat confused and very inarticulate.'"

13. Very similar behavior and worse has been reported

at the TBRNews website. According to TBRnews, a reporter in the White House has been sending them stories, which are really close to completely appalled rants, describing bizarre behavior and really off-the-wall religiosity on the part of the pResident and his staff. Recently, the reporter has sent a brief memo indicating that the White House is aware of what has been posted on TBRNews, and has gone completely and ballistically paranoid. The reported stated that he/she will be laying low for a while until the heat is off.

Also, check out their "Controlling the News" feature, allegedly written by an executive in what sounds like one of the network news divisions, describing what and why we get the news we do. It's in the form of memos to underlings. I don't know if it's true or not, but the memos, which date back at least a year, make an excellent work of fiction.

Many people claim that TBRNews is a Holocaust denier site, because it features a link to the infamous The Barnes Review, which clearly is of that ilk. However, I have had an e-mail discussion about this with the TBRNews's owner, Walter Storch, who claims that his site started as a forum to criticize and monitor the Holocaust deniers, and thus includes a link to the material that they have criticized. The photo on the home page of the website of a man with a swollen nose is David Irving, the infamous denier historian, modified to show him after being punched in the nose, according to Storch. All of this has been discussed before here on DU, so check the archives.

In the midst of writing this response, I attempted to access the TBRNews website, and nothing is working beyond the home page. Perhaps everyone in D.C. is trying to get in there. Either that or the Bushies have managed to scramble it!

18. The point may be that it HAS been kept quiet.

It may come out now, because according to the article, Bush's erratic behavior caused the Tenet "resignation" at this time, which explains why Powell and others were at the resignation meeting. It may be that the resignation meeting was not supposed to be about any resignation, but about another subject or subjects. The pRes completely went berserk and told Tenet he was out of there.

Don't discount as untrue the Washington rumor mill. I lived there for a while, even worked as a legislative assistant on the House side and had a friend well-placed in the media. Too frequently, these rumors and well-known secrets are true or have some truth in them. I do not dismiss them lightly.

27. I put a fair amount of credence in insider stories

I've heard a lot of them over the years, and most of them have held up to scrutiny. There were stories about Nixon's erratic behavior going back a long ways -- at least as far as the 1960 campaign -- that are only now being confirmed. The knowledge of JFK's affairs was circulating for a long time before it became public. My aunt was active in the New Jersey Democratic Party when I was a kid, and she used to pass on the hot gossip about people like Nelson Rockerfeller -- gossip which I've never had any reason to doubt.

My gut feeling about these things is that stories which depend on a single supposed witness or which involve events from many years ago have to be questioned. But stories which start out, "It is common knowledge among staffers and Washington insiders that . . . " are fairly likely to be accurate.

Clinton doesn't want to be remembered as the President who got blow jobs from interns while conducting the nation's business. Nah, he wants to go down in history (pun fully intended) as the madman who sent young men and women to die in a desperate attempt to reshape his presidency.
