Her column will appear on Thursdays and Sundays in place of Thomas L. Friedman's column while he is on sabbatical to finish a book about geopolitics."

Check out her latest book, "Nickled and Dimed." It should be required reading for every welfare to work whiner in the country. It should also be required reading for every twit who thinks the minimum wage doesn't need to be raised.

She's a wonderful writer. I sincerely hope they've learned their lesson on taking dictation from right wing stink thanks and the RNC controlled White House and keep her on permanently.

She's pretty a-political and votes Democratic out of habit, mostly. The book was a eye-opener for her. It also made me very solicitous of every waiter or waitress or cashier I come across. No matter how bad a day I'm having, I never take it out on them -- they're not getting paid enough to put up with my bullshit.

15. That's the reaction I had to the book.

Read it, and you'll never stiff a waitress out of a tip again. I've been to plenty of restaurants where the waitresses and busboys were obviously working their asses off, yet the service was still slow, mainly because the place was packed to the walls, there weren't enough staff to handle it, etc. People like us who have read Barbara's book are less likely to blame the waitstaff and take it in stride. Heck, if you're in a hurry, go to McDonald's.

I will never forget the condescending editorial she wrote in 2000 on why she was voting for Nader. Of course, it't not privilleged people like her who suffered in the Bush Administration, but maybe she wised up.

Loved her book "Nickel and Dimed" but didn't realize she voted Nader. What state was she voting in? Just wondering if it was in a battleground or "safe" state.

She is the wife of Michael Harrington of the DSA, if I'm not mistaken. I think I had a book by her on Eurosocialism and workers democracy. DSA is not my thing, with its coziness with right-wing social democrats like Tony Blair, but it's an interesting choice for the NYT.

Well, I'll read the Ehrenreich column anyway--no way I'll read the whole page.

As for the Nader vote, I also voted for Nader. After "don't ask/don't tell," the "reform of welfare as we know it," and the Democratic shift to the right, anybody who was still a liberal had to look elsewhere. And I'm ONLY voting for Kerry because we need to get rid of Dumbya. Not because I want a 2-party, winner-take-all, for-sale-to-the-highest-bidder political system to continue, not because I want the majority of Congressional "representatives" to continue to represent only the richest 5% of the country, not because I think we should have a sensible exit strategy from Iraq (we didn't have a sensible entry strategy, so what's the problem?), and not because of any loyalty to anyone who didn't stand up to oppose the Florida fraud.

Maybe it isn't easy, certainly not here on DU, but I'm Green and I'm proud. If not for the puke takeover of all 3 branches of government, I'd be voting for Cobb. We've been saying for a long time that we're tired of voting for the lesser of two evils and that we don't want to vote for evil, we want to vote for good. So far as I'm concerned, Kerry has 3 days from taking office to restore the Fairness Doctrine by executive order. If he hasn't done it by then, he's puke-light as far as I'm concerned. I'm fully capable of getting my news by shortwave from Canada and Australia, and by streaming AAR online, but if this country has free speech, I'm not supposed to have to do all that just to get both sides of the story. I'm old enough to remember when we got both sides on radio, on TV and in newspapers, and the only people who didn't were behind the Iron Curtain. If that curtain stays up on U.S. soil, I'll pay no attention to the man behind it.
