Nobel laureate joins Wall Street protest

Demonstrators continue to besiege New York's financial district to protest against high unemployment and the government's economic policies. A Nobel laureate has joined the rally. About 1,000 people gathered in a park near Manhattan's financial district on Sunday, despite the arrests of 700 demonstrators on the Brooklyn Bridge the previous day. The protestors, mostly young people, carried placards bearing their slogan "Occupy Wall Street" amid tight police security.

Among the protesters was Columbia University Professor Joseph Stiglitz, who received the Nobel Prize in economics in 2001. He criticized the US government for its failure to keep financial markets in check during the global financial crisis of 2008. Stiglitz said the protests were bound to happen and long overdue, with 25 million people without regular jobs. He expressed support for the protests, noting that they may lead to greater movement toward change. The New York protests have sparked similar demonstrations in other cities across the United States, with fresh rallies scheduled for Monday. The protestors are using social networking Internet sites to spread information.

13. Agreed. Last night I watched a segment on CNN with the hack John Avalon, they

not only tried to dismiss and mis characterize the participants at the protest, there was no
mention of Stiglitz being there on Sunday. No mention of what he said, nothing. I was furious and needed to vent, so I phoned
their contact phone number to complain.

One of their deceptive practices was to mention they spoke to one teacher, one nurse, but with
no interview of either person. They used a condescending tone and smirked often..these are representative
of the far left..blah blah blah.

Economist Joseph Stiglitz was at the Occupy Wall Street protest in Zuccotti Park yesterday. He was joined by New York Times book reviewer a and economics columnist, Jeff Madrick.

Here are some highlights:

Stiglitz looked surprised by the call and repeat form of speaking the protestors use at first, but then he seemed to enjoy it. Pointed out that it was illegal to use a bullhorn in the park on a Sunday, and he said that was an example of "too many regulations stopping demonstrations and not enough from stopping Wall Street from behaving."


He said that Wall Street got rich by "misallocating capital" and by "socializing losses and privatizing gain... that's not capitalism... its a distorted economy."


Madrick spoke mostly about predatory lending.
