It doesn't take a rocket scientist to launch a late-stage campaign attack. A veteran political operative, with a knack for the sensational, will do just fine.
Steve Lonegan Bogota's Steve Lonegan, the hired New Jersey point man for David and Charles Koch, the right-wing oil billionaires, offered a textbook example last week, filing "by overnight delivery," an ethics complaint against state Sen. Robert Gordon. Gordon, a Democrat from Fair Lawn, is locked in a tight reelection race against Republican Bergen County Freeholder John Driscoll of Paramus in the 38th District.
Here's the Lonegan method: Portray the legislator as a self-enriching profiteer by stitching together details from his financial disclosure forms and voting records into a conflict-of-interest allegation. Put out just enough information to make it appear alarming. Send out a news release with some eye-popping rhetoric, like "scam."
