The first presidential debate is scheduled for Sept. 30 in Coral Gables, Fla.

President Bush holds a key advantage heading into the presidential debates: Only he and his strategists know if the pivotal events will actually take place and how many there will be.

The differences are potentially significant. If Bush agrees to the full schedule, that would include 270 minutes of direct confrontation: 90 minutes on domestic policy, 90 minutes on foreign affairs and 90 minutes before an audience of swing voters. The Washington Post reported last week that Bush may agree to only two hourlong debates, which would mean just 120 minutes of interaction and probably no questions from the public.

away with only participating in two debates and not answering directly to the people (town hall) forum....Kerry's first question during the next election should be..."George, Why didn't you want to meet in that format?"...he would probably stammer for 5 minutes!!!

there won't be any debates. Something will happen just before the first one scheduled for 9/30 and George W. Dimwit will suddenly become very busy looking "presidential.":eyes: What concerns me is just what that "something" might turn out to be.

10. I hate to defend Bush.....

and I think I will have to do alot of drinking after I submit this post....but in 1996 Dole wanted 3 debates and Clinton would only accept 2 debates and Clinton got his way....If I am wrong tan I deserved to be flamed at.....but this is how I remember it happening in 1996....not having said that, Clinton would never turned down a debate where he gets to discuss the issues with the american people directly, having them ask the questions. I dont know of any other politician that would unless he is scared of the truth coming out.

It's crazy that voters would let a presidential candidate get through with only 120 minutes of questioning. Students that take the GRE to get into graduate school, or the MCAT to get into Med School are subjected to far longer testing. So why shouldn't the leader of the free world be so thoroughly tested? In my opinion, less emphasis should be put on campaigning and the candidates should be required to interact with the public through a series of weekly debates that extend throughout the period leading up to the election.
