Cal State students take in $42,000 for Moore's visit

SAN MARCOS ---- Cal State San Marcos student government leaders said Friday they have received $42,000 from local donors to bring controversial filmmaker Michael Moore to North County ---- close to their goal of between $50,000 and $55,000. The maker of the documentary "Fahrenheit 9/11" is set to come to the Del Mar Fairgrounds on Oct. 12, according to student leaders.

Yamout said the $42,000 has been received in the last three days from at least seven donors. She said she is certain the student government will be able to raise the rest of the money by Oct. 8., the deadline to pay for the fairgrounds and Moore's fee.
"To raise $42,000 in three days is incredible," Yamout said, adding that the unsolicited money has come from both liberals and conservatives. People are donating to pay for Moore's visit because they "see the university as a place of discord and engagement," Yamout said.

Students opted to pay for Moore's visit with donated money after Cal State president Karen Haynes, on Sept. 13, said the university would not foot the bill for his visit because he has become a partisan figure and it is against the law to use public money to pay for such visits. Her veto nullified a vote by student leaders Sept. 10 to contribute $6,500 in student money toward Moore's visit.
After Hayne's decision, Moore said he would come only if university fees paid for the trip. Otherwise, he said, he would be condoning the administration's nullifying of a democratic vote of the student government.
