"...Market Shares Corp. of Mt. Prospect conducted the statewide survey of 528 likely Democratic primary voters and 503 likely Republican primary voters between Jan. 6 and Sunday. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.

Though more Democrats than Republicans had picked a Senate candidate, 38 percent of Democrats remained undecided. There was no frontrunner among the seven Democrats on the ballot, with four of them closely bunched at the top.

State Sen. Barack Obama of Chicago, Comptroller Dan Hynes and Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas all received the support of 14 percent of those surveyed, with Hull drawing 10 percent. Former Chicago Board of Education President Gery Chico had 6 percent...."

2. We should get behind Obama

when you put someone like Dan Hynes, a Daley machine typical pol against someone like Jack Ryan, an attractive outsider with a great story, in high tax states, democrats tend to lose.

I feel very strongly about this. Obama's race would be a plus because he isn't a Sharpton tpye polarizer, but in fact an intellectual and a classic family man. He will go over very well with soccer moms

I admit I'm not from the area, but 2 of my friends are, and it seems like he comes from the Daley people, which is somewhat of a parallel to what the south Boston Irish establismment is to Massachusetts politics

He's very much middle-class, suburban 'lace curtain' Irish. Daley likes him, usually, but he's not part of the Cook. Co. Deocratic organization; in fact, he's quite independent. He and Patrick Quinn, our Lt. Gov., battle for the unofficial political title of "Mr. Clean".

Like the Democratic party nati0nally, we have a wealth of awesome Senate candidates. Obama would be a fantastic senator, and I may well vote for him in the primary--- I've truly not decided. :)

His father is a DNC member. His father also served as the Illinois state senate president and Cook County assessor. Plus, his brother served as Al Gore's campaign manager in Illinois in 2000. His family is definitely part of the Cook County organization.

And his campaing is co-chaired by Cook County Commissioner John Daley.

Above the county level in IL, the Democratyic party becomes semi-incestuous in Illinois. They all know each other and (usually) work together, but seeing 2 work together doesn't mean they are 'Organization dems'.:hi:

Even though I don't live in Illinois, when I was back in Chicago last August seeing my friend (and going to the Silent Film Festival, of course!) I hooked up with Nancy Skinner's campaign and drove down to Springfield with them.

She clearly has died on the vine, but I was very impressed with the others, especially Obama. He really sticks out in my mind.

I just know that we'll pick up that seat in Illinois. :hi:

I had the chance to meet the governor while I was there and I was thrilled by the energy level among the party in Illinois. It's a great state with a lot of amazing, hard-working Democrats!

Too many people were too busy crying in their beer to realize what an amazing feat Democrats accomplished here in Illinois in 2002, and we did it by attacking Republicans, rather than each other.

in the cornfields of northern part of the state. of course it`s pretty much republican so i suppose they have written this part of the state. as long as there are enough votes in the chicago area the downstate gets short changed. i had never heard of barack untill i read about him here at du. the primaries are not that far off.....

32. I Co-chaired a fundraiser for Obama.

He is absolutely awesome. I've not seen that kind of energy or vision in a long time. He's got great support down here in Champaign County--but this is a Dem party that is very progressive.

Having said that, I will also say I am anticipating that Hynes will most likely be our nominee when it is all over with. He lacks the charisma that Obama has, and his message is DLC all the way, but he's got an organization to die for. He just picked up the Illinois AFL-CIO endorsement because he's got the building Trades solidly in his camp. THEY were the ones who showed up to vote at that nominating meeting. Past history has shown that in a Dem primary labor is a huge factor in winning.

We have got two very solid candidates. It bodes well for a second Dem Senator from Illinois!
