In fact, the way I would describe it is he stumbled over what could have been the best line of the night.

Hitchens is sneaky because he always approaches these things as if what he is saying is reasonable and it can be difficult to come back to an approach like that, however, he opened himself up to the truth being told time and again and nobody called him on it. I can understand missing out on wide open opportunites for counterpoints with Hitchens, though, and expect anybody to miss a few opportunities with him. IMO, Baldwin missed every wide open opportunity to counter bullshit being spewed by Hitchens in this case.

With the woman, Baldwin blew at least five wide open opportunities to call her on the bullshit for every one he pointed out. What was worse is she spewed out every astroturf talking point GOP memo verbatim and any self respecting DUer with 20 posts could have countered every last one of them. Baldwin really only came back powerfully on one and IMO, he stumbled that one.

When your party has only 1, yes, that's ONE, black member of Congress, you need all the pretty black women you can find to be on television talk shows. For all we know, Tara could be as manufactured as "Jeff Christie" (now Rush Limbaugh). She may have Black Panther posters on her bedroom walls and worship Karl Marx. But that's not going to pay the bills. As a female black strategist for the GOP, she's in demand. I truly doubt the accurate political leanings of many of the people on TV. They follow the money. They're selling a product...whether or not they use the product is immaterial. They get paid either way.
