We should start this rumour if they refuse to keep a paper trail. This would call attention to the problem.

will be okay to get away with it? Will they be afraid to confront them? Apparently, they don't even want to validate it has not been hacked.
The media needs to get some balls and do a story on this. I think 60 minutes or Dateline can get back to the roots of journalism with a story like this. Voting is sacred!

I've heard that there are at least 4 teams out there working on programs to ease hacking these things as we speak. By the time they are done, it will be easier to hack a Diebold voting machine than Windows 95.
Or so I've heard...

casing the area around the voting station for wireless APs sounds like a good idea. I wonder what federal laws there are against this though. The new wireless security standards are going to be out this September and hopefully they will be implemented into any voting software that uses wireless although I wonder why in the hell there would use wireless to begin with.

And then the "liberal" media won't be covering the faulty machines or the GOP ties to the companies that operate them. Instead, they'll focus on the lying, thieving Democrats trying to steal the election.
But, then, again, perhaps that is exactly what the GOP would like to happen.
BTW, welcome to DU Gman2. :hi: Do you have any other "brilliant" strategies for us Democrats?

This is idiotic on many levels. First, we have a great hammer to beat the 'Pugs over the head with, Diebold machines can be tracked straight back to major 'Pug backers. Why muddy the water with rumors that Dems are hacking the machines? Second, if these rumors are started, it is guaranteed to backfire on us. Hell, there are wingnuts(and average citizens also) who admit that Florida was stolen from us, but so what, St. Louis polls were forced to stay open late, thus since both sides cheat, they balance out. We DO NOT want that to happen with the Diebold story. Third, if you wish to get this out into the open, rumors aren't the way to do it. Write your papers, TV, and other media outlets. Have a little faith, this story is coming out drip drip drip. But it will burst before the '04 election. First in places like Mother Jones, then the foreign press, then NPR, the the evening TV news. Rumor mongering that Dem hackers are behind it will just turn around and bite the Dems on the ass.

because as things stand now the very worst case is that the election results will be falsified to their benefit. If there is the possibility that the results will not benefit them then maybe it would get their attention.
Seriously, what do you think it would take to get the issue addressed?

I've seen things like this at work before. Somebody gets ahold of a big issue the major media is ignoring, agitates around here about it, gets to work making the case, it gets picked up by some liberal mag, then NPR or Pacifica pick it up, then it goes into the mainstream media.
Starting a rumor that Dems are hacking the machines might(or not) make the mainstream media pick up this issue faster, but if they do it will simply bite us. Be patient, we all want change now, but anything takes some time.

Seriously though. I suspect this is mostly a venting post. Some here had hoped that the entire repuke empire would come tumbling down as the people realised what horrors had been down by them. Instead we get some tepid responses from the media and it seems to be blowing over.
Technically I agree with you that this thing still has legs. There are reporters out there right now chasing down leads. Just because the mainline media and the most visible talking heads are conservative does not mean the entirety of the industry in owned. If this has merit it will break. In the mean time some want to vent a little steam.

Only exit polls and paper trails can assure our vote security. I don't want anyone, Dem, Repug, Mafia, Foreign Agents, hacksters, pranksters, CIA, etc. being able to manipulate our voting. Who in hell said only American political parties would have an interest in this sport? We are selling these monsters to other countries and who says our gov would not have an interest in changing a few votes in, say, Columbia or Niger or where ever we have a "national interest" in an election? Let's start a thread on how many different people or organizations in the world would have an interest in vote fraud in our country. All I see are the arrogant Repugs trying to stop a certifiable audit trail. Don't they realize they can be "had" too ??

The FBI and SS are not known for their sense of humor! So far at least 3 states have moved to make sure these machines are not used until the problems are addressed. More are sure to follow.
So what exactly have you done legally to help? I suggest before you post another poorly thought out thread like this you first take 5 minutes to contact the Secretary of State for your state as well as your state and local elections officials and let your elected representatives know how you feel instead of trying to make all of the BBV people look bad!

1.) Diebold is being forced to rewrite its code - the Johns Hopkins report pretty much guarantees that. Any hack that relies on the old Diebold code will fail.
2.) Insider hacks will always trump outsider hacks. And you won't get access to the county-level election management systems. And guess who sells the machines and the county-level election management systems? Hint: not Democrats.
I agree with Carlos (how about that), this kind of talk only works against us.

It represents the level of frustration that people feel about the absence of real coverage by the media of this critical issue and the belief that it is caused by media bias. It’s doubtful that anyone will read this thread and seriously think that hackers are making a plan to subvert the election process in a public web page and encouraging their plans be advertised.

Don't forget that under the current laws, thanks to the Patriot Act, a 'little joke' like this could be turned into a federal case and get DU shut down. Will you still think it's just harmless fun then?
As far as the media is concerned, just because you don't see this story on page 1 of every paper every day does not mean it's not being widely covered, with more stories coming out every day! :)

Ok Then. Al Queda is the culprit. They are using the Diebold flaws to disrupt our election process. As a minimal step, we need immediate paper trail and exit polling. Jimmy Carter to monitor. scientific sampling of those paper receipts. And an investigation of fishy election results now history. At the very least, if we are going to have touchscreens, the gov. should run it and I dont mean DARPA.

|
...where our Republican, let there be no audit trail, Secretary of State was put on some election committee and the SOS's decided to shelve the topic of voting security until their next, financed by the big voting companies meeting....
Part of the problem is the Secretary's of State. There's not much oversight of this position and a lot of potential power. Therefore, entitities like the Election Center and others have been working full time "helping" SOS craft voting legislation that gives them full power to make any darn changes in the software they want, cetified or not and state legislators pass laws prohibiting actual people counting the votes because they didn't read or understand the legislation and they TRUSTED the Secretary of State.
I hope you have a good one, because it will make your battle easier. In this state, ours and his predecessor are a major part of the problem and also contribute to the national problem.
Don't stop with those people- raise cain with county officials and let your state legislators know you want some action.
