people want Politicians to be the stupidest people on Earth?
Is that it?
Because if that's not the case, why in the hell would you critize someone for changing his mind about an issue after 30 years of life experience. Give me a break.

| 4. Bush flip-flopped on drug usage, alcohol abuse, and Christianity |
|
He only became born-again recently.
Actually, I don't know if it is fair to say that he flip-flopped on alcohol abuse and drug usage, because he may still drink to excess and use cocaine. Hard to say.

| 8. In 1972 I was against abortion, too. It wasn't easily understood back then |
|
and it was only discussed in hushed tones like most issues related to sex back then.
Especially true for Catholics. That's what took Kucinich so long. He truly was personally opposed to abortion, just as Kerry said he was 32 years ago.
The whole point about choice is that you can be personally opposed to abortion, meaning you wouldn't make that decision for yourself, but still respect the different choice another woman makes for her life and wellbeing.
There is nothing inconsistent about this, especially considering the timeframe.

and people just are not hearing this. i dont have to even respect a womans choice to get that abortion, i just know, the way the u.s. is set up, i dont have the right to dictate what she does with her body. i can even not like it, i can be outraged that she does it, and still she has the right to do it.

Conservatives should try it sometime. People whose opinions and beliefs never change over time are people who (1) do not learn from experience, (2) do not learn from mistakes, (3) scare the hell out of me.

|
Edited on Thu Apr-22-04 05:24 PM by papau
So a pro-choice person should not say that they "opposed to abortion"?
Or that abortion as an alternative to birth control is "wrong"
Or that abortion as an alternative to having a child is not a positive?
And this 27 year old single males sees this as "common sense"
- and as a question that should left to the States (OK - the 27 year old was not into a right to one own body and choice as a Federal right - and in the older Kerry's view was incorrect - had the wrong point of view - at age 27.
And 3 years later Kerry felt that there are larger issues than abortion including "how to put people back to work, how to reduce crime and how to keep institutions from breaking down" that are more relevant to folks - and then included with the lesser issues the death penalty and Vietnam amnesty. And again while both the older Kerry and the younger Kerry would not attempt to tell someone how to order these issues, the older Kerry would keep his opinion as to what is more important to a majority of folks to himself,
And this is not maturity - it is flip/flop?
Does drug and alcohol and sex nut AWOL to born-again count as a flip/flop.
Or does our media have 2 standards ?
I know - silly question
:-)

Drudge needs to get a life. I don't even think that is a flip-flop at all. This is the problem that conservatives have - everything is black and white, all or nothing, them and us. I think Kerry probably made some real valid point there, and there is always a real sneering bunch of condescension from people who have never dealt with abortion on a personal or up-close basis.
Those of us who are Catholic and progressive have to wrangle with this issue - without imposing our views on everyone else. Kerry will get lumped by this either way in the press - same as Cuomo.
Note to Drudge - why don't you go find out the info on G.W.'s cocaine habit and driving record????

| 12. Why do people even listen to this "flip-flop" nonsense anyway?? |
|
I know of virtually no one with half a brain who doesn't change some of their thinking - especially over a period of 30 years. "Flip-flops" are an overrated tool of the ignorant. So what if Senator so-and-so changes his position? The real test is for people who SAY one thing, then DO another - or just plain lie!!
Going around, for instance, calling oneself a compassionate conservative while raising the arsenic levels in your water?
Calling a program "No child left behind" that you don't fund?
Putting on a flight suit some 30 years to late?
How about that "crackdown" on corporate crime or the "corporate reform"? Seen Ken Lay in cuffs lately???

|
is the exactly what the majority of pro-choice people believe. The states rights thing is irrelevant because the comment was made 30 years ago. That issue is long since settled. The rest is essentially that abortion should be used sparingly and not as an alternative to birth control. Just about everyone I know thinks that. I dare say most pro-choice people think that.

When I read "1972" and "1975", I almost bursted out laughing!
This is the best they've got? That's an example of Kerry's "flip-flops"? A change in opinion over the span of thirty years? Wow. I think, barring a terrorist attack or Diebold attack, Kerry's got this one in the bag.

Maybe the Chimp's brain is frozen in time, so his 57-year-old self is identical to his 27-year-old self... That's a "plus?"!
