Wednesday, he was back wearing his old military uniform and shaking the hands of his new colleagues in the U.S.-formed brigade in charge of restoring peace to this restive city of 300,000 after a monthlong siege by U.S. Marines.
"I joined the resistance and fought against the Americans. What do you expect from someone who saw his pride and dignity humiliated," Mohammad told Reuters after registering his name for the new unit.
"For a whole year I was unemployed, I didn't receive any salary because I was a Baath Party member. I sold my furniture to support my family."
