Howard Dean announced yesterday that his campaign has continued to build on his success in Oklahoma with the hiring of Chilton Ladd Marshall, a long-time field organizer, as state coordinator.

"Oklahoma is a crucial state both for its February primary and next year’s general election and we intend to fight hard for it," Governor Dean said. "We’re not going to cede any state—and we certainly feel that we’ll run strong in Oklahoma, where we’ve already got a great base of support."

As the first official campaign staff, Marshall will build upon the extensive unofficial network of Dean’s grassroots supporters already in place that self-organized through the website Meetup.com and www.deanforamerica.com. Thriving Dean 2004 Meetups exist in Oklahoma City, Stillwater, and Tulsa.

The campaign expects to open a full state headquarters next month.

Marshall, a native Oklahoman, has an extensive political organizing background, including serving as field director for the Women’s Voter Information Project in Arkansas and director of operations on the “No on 695” campaign in 2001.

"I look forward to working with my fellow Oklahomans in electing Howard Dean as our next President. The enthusiasm and passion of our supporters has been tremendous, unlike anything I’ve seen before," Marshall said.

Marshall, a Native American, attended Norman High School and the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma.

I think he's smart enough to not really mean or believe that. But I suppose he decided to say that to dems in a state who's primary you wamt to win, who actually would like to have there state be even close to competative in the general.

While it has been leaning back to the right as of late they recently elected a Dem governor (3 way race) and have a Dem controlled State legislature.

No candidate running for president whether he be Dean or anyone else is going to say in a state "I'm here for your primary votes but I know I have a snowball's chance of hell winning here in November." They all play the game that this is going to be the year we carry X state.

You rally your troops and sometimes miracles do happen. Dean can be criticized for a lot of things but I don't think this is one of them.

Well, if it was, he failed to get it defeated as it won 54-46% if I recall.

13. No not all

Oklahoma hasn't supported a Democrat for president since 1964. The last time it even came close was 1976, when it only narrowly gave its electoral votes to Gerald Ford (R). Since then it has been loyally Republican in presidential elections. Democrats have been able to win downballot races there, although the 1990s were tough on them; and Brad Henry's victory in 2002 was the first statewide victory for Governor won since 1990 for Democrats.

But Henry's win is due to a third party candidate who polled well. Richardson, who was a disgruntled Republican, basically "Naderized" Largent. Largent's offensive comments to a reporter about his whereabouts on 9/11

I don't see the Democrats coming close to winning Oklahoma in 2004. Unless they can get Eastern Oklahoma to turn out strongly for the party, get the people there to "overcome" their "cultural war" concerns, keep their losses down in the urban areas of Oklahoma City/Tulsa, and break even in the Western part of the state, I don't see them prevailing there.

If Oklahoma is even remotely competetive in 2004 that means that Bush is going to lose. Otherwise I don't see any point in spending any time or money there unless the people there locally can provide compelling results to show that the state is winnable.

My mother used to live there and she was not well-like (half white and half Cherokee.) Is that still a big issue?
