Quotes

"President Reagan cannot go to Bitburg. It is out of the question for the leader of the
Western world to lay a wreath in a war cemetery where Nazi storm troopers are buried...
-- The Washington Post (23 April 1985)

"Some good has come of the Bitburg business. That good made itself evident in the strong popular
reaction against the trip, a reaction which proves that -- though our century's history, and its meaning,
may have escaped all concerned at the White House, it has not escaped most Americans."
-- New York Post (26 April 1985)

"It's over, but the Bitburg blunder, too, should not be forgotten. All day long he talked of Hell and Nazi evil,
to submerge the event. . . . Not even Mr. Reagan's eloquent words before the mass graves of Bergen-Belsen
could erase the fact that his visit there was an afterthought, to atone for the inadvertent salute to those SS graves."
-- New York Times (6 May 1985)

" so macabre and so awful that one can only wonder what possessed Reagan."
-- The chairman of the International Network of Children of Jewish Holocaust Survivors, Menachem Rosensaft,

Over the years, revisionists have tried to lie Reagan;s way out of this blunder, the biggest of which was,
"We made a mistake, it was a cloudy day and we couldn't read the road signs and we ended up in the wrong place," but Reagan promised Helmut Kohl he'd visit the cemetary and it was the press's job to get the story right.

THIS IS HOW I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER RONNIE RAYGUN.

17. LOL at the neo-fascists. Then, let's kick their ASSES!
They can't even stand having John F. Kennedy's name associated with one of our nation's proudest accomplishments, landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to Earth. Remember, the Pruneface ordered "Cape Kennedy" get renamed "Cape Canaveral." The slugs in Congress went along.

BTW: Great reference to the Fourth Reich. For those new to the subject:

Die Fahne hoch

Raise high the flag,
The ranks are closed and tight,
Storm Troopers march,
With firm and steady step.

Souls of the comrades
Shot by Reds and Countermight
Are in our ranks
And march along in step.

Open the road
Just for the brown battalion.
Let's clear the way
For the storm trooperman.

In hope, to the swastika
Raised are eyes of millions,
Dawn breaks for Freedom
And bread for all man.

This is the final
Bugle call to arms.
Already we are set
Prepared to fight.

Soon Hitler's flags will wave
O'er every single street.
Enslavement ends
When soon we set things right.

25. ok: German version:
Horst Wessel Lied

Die Fahne hoch die Reihen fest geschlossen
S. A. marschiert mit ruhig festem Schritt

Bald flattern Hitler-fahnen Uber allen Strassen
Die Knechtschaft dauert nur mehr kurze Zeit

Die Fahne hoch die Reihen fest geschlossen
S. A. marschiert mit ruhig festem Schritt
Kam'raden die Rotfront und Reaktion erschossen
Marschier'n im Geist in unsern Reihen mit

4. Bonzo Goes to Bitburg
You've got to pick up the pieces C'mon, sort your trash
You better pull yourself back together Maybe you've got too much cash
Better call, call the law When you gonna turn yourself in? Yeah
You're a politician Don't become one of Hitler's children

Bonzo goes to bitburg then goes out for a cup of tea
As I watched it on TV somehow it really bothered me
Drank in all the bars in town for an extended foreign policy
Pick up the pieces

My brain is hanging upside down I need something to slow me down

My brain is hanging upside down I need something to slow me down

Shouldn't wish you happiness, wish her the very best Fifty thousand dollar dress
Shaking hands with your highness See through you like cellophane
You watch the world complain, but you do it anyway Who am I, am I to say

Bonzo goes to bitburg then goes out for a cup of tea
As I watched it on TV somehow it really bothered me
Drank in all the bars in town for an extended foreign policy
Pick up the pieces

My brain is hanging upside down I need something to slow me down

My brain is hanging upside down I need something to slow me down

If there's one thing that makes me sick It's when someone tries to hide behind politics
I wish that time could go by fast Somehow they manage to make it last

My brain is hanging upside down I need something to slow me down

My brain is hanging upside down I need something to slow me down

My brain is hanging upside down I need something to slow me down

My brain is hanging upside down I need something to slow me down

6. There was a clear message in this act.
The message was that fascists and Hitler sympathizers are welcome in the anti-communist axis Reagan envisioned. He wasn't especially concerned about fascism.

8. A Bitburg chronology

http://www.quickchange.com/reagan/1985.html

4/11/85
The White House announces that President Reagan will lay a wreath at the Bitburg, West Germany, military cemetery housing the graves of both American and Nazi soldiers. It is quickly noted that there are, in fact, no Americans buried there.

4/16/85
As the contra aid vote approaches, President Reagan claims he "just had a verbal message delivered to me from Pope John Paul, urging us to continue our efforts in Central America." The Vatican quickly issues a denial.

4/18/85
While Michael Deaver is in West Germany searching for an "appropriate" concentration camp for the President to visit, President Reagan defends his visit to Bitburg by claiming the German soldiers "were victims, just as surely as the victims in the concentration camps."

4/29/85
President Reagan defends the Bitburg visit as "morally right," adding, "I know all the bad things that happened in that war. I was in uniform for four years myself." President Reagan spent his time during World War Two in Hollywood, making training films.

5/5/85
After having visited the Bergen-Belsen death camp, President Reagan makes an eight minute stop at Bitburg. During the ceremony, he cites a letter from 13-year-old Beth Flom who, he claims, "urged me to lay the wreath at Bitburg cemetery in honor of the future of Germany." In fact, she urged him not to go at all.

<Note, the contra vote item above has nothing to do with Bitburgm obviously, but I couldn't resist leaving it in as a further reminder of President Reagan's principles.>

10. Add the Republican Heritage Groups Council onto that list
They had real-live Nazis working on the campaigns in the 1980s. Some of it finally came to light during the 1988 campaign. Here's a good source for information on this:

Old Nazis, the New Right and the Reagan Administration
Book by Russ Bellant
http://www.namebase.org/cgi-bin/nb01/LZ

Summary:

This publication first appeared during the 1988 Bush campaign, and with the help of a series of articles in "Washington Jewish Week" it provoked a minor scandal. At issue was the close association of the Republican Party with Eastern European nationalists who had emigrated to the U.S. when their pro-Nazi regimes collapsed. Pages 17-34 are on the National Republican Heritage Groups (Nationalities) Council, pages 35-50 on the American Security Council, and a final chapter on other "domestic fascist networks."

16. Secret Support

In fact, the Iraqi military machine that Bush sent half a million troops to confront was partly armed and financed by the United States.

The Iraqgate saga stretches across a decade. The early 1980s set the stage: Ronald Reagan was in the White House, and covert operations were the rage in Washington. Among the dozens of shady foreign policy initiatives launched during Reagan's first term in office was a clandestine effort to reinforce Iraq, which had invaded its neighbor Iran in 1980 and was locked into a vicious and costly war. The Iran-Iraq conflict, the "First Gulf War," would consume a million lives before the cease-fire in 1988.

At the advice of CIA Director William Casey, in 1982 President Reagan ordered the Defense Department and the CIA to contribute to the carnage by supplying the Iraqi military with intelligence information, advice, and hardware for battle. Former Reagan National Security official Howard Teicher recalls that Casey "personally spearheaded the effort to insure that Iraq had sufficient military weapons, ammunition and vehicles to avoid losing the Iran-Iraq war."

Driven by a desire to contain and punish revolutionary Iran, the Reagan administration "tilted" toward Iraq and buddied up to Saddam. The CIA and Pentagon became deeply involved in efforts to channel war materiel to Iraq. After interviewing high-ranking national security officials, journalist Murray Waas reported that "among the weapons made available to Saddam, with White House approval, were top-of-the-line HAWK anti-aircraft missiles, originally sent to Jordan's King Hussein and quietly passed along to Iraq." U.S.-made helicopters and high-tech computers were also added to Saddam's arsenal.

In addition to greasing the skids for the transfer of U.S. armaments to Iraq, the White House promoted sales from third countries. According to one former official quoted by Waas, "shipments from Europe would not have been possible without the approval and acquiescence of the Reagan administration."

In addition to opening the flow of weapons to Iraq, the United States provided valuable intelligence data to Iraqi military leaders. Declassified White House e-mail messages indicate that Reagan administration officials also engaged in "battlefield management" -- offering strategic advice to the Iraqi military, such as suggestions for which Iranian assets to target.

The effort to support Saddam extended beyond the realm of covert action. During the 1980s the United States publicly granted billions of dollars of credit guarantees to Iraq under the Department of Agriculture's Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC) program. The guarantees committed the United States to pay off banks that loaned money to Iraq to purchase U.S. agricultural goods, should the Iraqis default. This move bolstered Iraq's war-bled economy and freed up capital for Saddam to purchase more weapons. Some of the loans were themselves used to procure arms.

Mitterrand was dragged to Bitburg as well. I don't know why a US President let the location and the interpretation ("German Soldiers were Victims too") be chosen by an incompetent German Chancellor, but Bitburg was Kohl's pet peeve (is, probably).
