| Poll question: Poll 3 of 5: Greatest U. S. President (1869-1909)? |
|
Edited on Wed Jun-09-04 12:53 PM by elperromagico
This is one of a series of polls designed to determine which President of the United States was the greatest of all time in the opinion of DUers. The Presidents are placed chronologically in groups of eight or nine. Here are the links to each poll: Poll 1 of 5: Greatest U. S. President (1789-1841)?Poll 2 of 5: Greatest U. S. President (1841-1869)?Poll 3 of 5: Greatest U. S. President (1869-1909)?Poll 4 of 5: Greatest U. S. President (1909-1961)?Poll 5 of 5: Greatest U. S. President (1961-Present)?Tomorrow, I will post a "runoff" poll listing the winners from each of these five polls. Any President who receives over 50% in his poll will be included. In instances where no President receives over 50%, the top two votegetters will advance to the runoff. This runoff poll will be used to determine which President was the greatest of all time.As always, Happy Voting! :hi:

yes too much of an empire builder, but his domestic policies were heading this country in the right direction. Cleveland gets some kudos from me for his integrity and honesty but he did nothing to help this country during the economic downturn during his second term.

He proved that the Democrats were no longer a regional party of bitter southerners after the Civil War, much the same way Clinton proved were were no longer a bitter party of New England elitists.

About whether or not Reagan was the worst President of the 20th Century. And I remarked that Bush seems to have the worst President of the 21st Century all sewn up already. But then it occurred to me that I was being optimistic. This batch here, up until and not including Teddy Roosevelt, the Presidents of the Gilded Age, were a godawful crew all in a row. Bush might conceivably be merely the first of another such era.

God forbid we have another string of Presidents like this (or like Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover). I shudder at the thought, though perhaps we are due for another slew of 'em.

| 8. Well, it was an era of Congressional dominance. |

Most of the Presidents between Lincoln and TR were cowed by Congress.
