SEA ISLAND, Ga (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin (news - web sites) stepped into the U.S. political campaign on Thursday, saying the Democrats had "no moral right" to criticize President Bush (news - web sites) over Iraq (news - web sites).

The Kremlin leader, answering a reporter's question in Sea Island, Georgia, suggested that the Democrats were two-faced in criticizing Bush on Iraq since it had been the Clinton administration that authorized the 1999 bombing of Yugoslavia by U.S. and NATO (news - web sites) forces.

I'm going to assume that I'm wrong here, considering that not a single other person in this thread interpreted his comment the way I did, but I think he's just saying what many people here have said before, basically that if you supported (voted) for the Iraq war, you don't have a very clear moral position to now argue against it from.

Now, I don't agree with that, and I don't feel particularly comfortable in defending him, but I don't think he was attempting to convey anything positive toward *'s direction at all. I actually think it's a fairly "left" statement.

The anti-war left was virtually silent on our military adventures in Kosovo and Somalia. Furthermore, there was no peace with Iraq during the Clinton Administration. Must I remind everyone that we bombed them at regular intervals?

I had read a number of times on this board people critizing Bush Sr. on Iraq and Bush Jr. on Iraq. Conspicuous by absence is any criticism of Clinton policy on Iraq.

Could it be because people around here tend to like Clinton?

Much of what you say is right, but I wonder who you are speaking of. I agree that many of those opposing Bush are hypocrites and opportunists who seem to only object to that "(R)" next to the names of some Republicans, but I would not refer to them as "the anti-war left" by any stretch.

On the contrary, there was quite active opposition to Clinton in this period:--there was no free pass given to Clinton from those that I would refer to as the "anti-war left".

This is an important point to make, but I believe you greatly overstep yourself with the phrasing of the first body sentence.

The truth is I remember clearly *some* of my friends opposing the bombing campaign in eastern europe. However there was not the concerted and organized opposition to Clinton's military adventures from the left as there was from the right, just as today there is less opposition from the right but there is from the left.

It seems to depend on who is quarterbacking, IMO.

I just went over and read that other thread you mentioned. Fourty-odd posts so far and no one's mentioned Iraq, Afganistan, or Kosovo. One reference to Somalia blaming the UN. Several comments of a peace time president with no war.
