...I'll respond for anyone else who might be reading this. You should realize that, first of all, Clinton was not at the funeral yet when that happened. He was still outside when the incident occurred. Second, I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with laughing or smiling at a funeral; it depends on the context. I think a lot of the people on this thread are thinking of the Clinton incident and have the hypocrisy of the right wing in mind more than just the fact that the Bushes are smiling. Third, why wouldn't Clinton adopt a more somber demeanor when he realized he was on camera? He probably realized how it looked, realized that the Clinton-haters in the media would have a field day with it, realized it might detract from his friend's funeral, and decided he'd better change his expression PDQ. I would have done the same in his situation.

Sometimes during a funeral people recall humorous events that involved the deceased. There are many times you will see smiles during a funeral. I don't know the context of this photo.

related humorous stories about things RR said so there were some smiles. One was about a boy who wrote him asking for Federal Funds to clean up his room and Reagan wrote back and said that at the time funds were low and tho his mom was probably right to declare his room a disaster area, he would have to pitch in and do it himself and welcome to the volunteer corp.
That kind of stuff is what they were laughing about.

Others here chalk it up to the relating of life stories about the decesaed. However, there are others in the photo who are clearly not laughing, but rather have very somber looks on their faces. Wonder what the smirk family found so funny.

Daddy Bush, Stormtrooper Mama Bush, George and Laura are smiling. Nancy Reagan has a pained look on her face. Colin Powell's wife looks like she's crying. Jimmy Carter and Colin Powell are not smiling. It doesn't look to me like a joke has just been told, at least not the type of joke that would make the average person smile.

funerals are tense. I've been to many and there is usually some kind of humour to break the reality of the somberness as a defense mechanism.
But I do have some comments. Like, doesn't Junior look like he has to pee or something? Everyone else's poses are normal, his is, wierd.... surprise, surprise.
Jimmy Carter looks great. I love that guy just because he sounds like he has a freaking soul.
Babs always looked like something matured that came out of Rosemary's Babycarriage.
Poppy is probably wracking up the numbers in his head of what the next drug deal is going to get him.
Colon is working on his resumé, I see.... His wife is telling him it's ok to 'embellish' a bit.... everyone does it!

This is just one still photograph. Robert Ingersoll once said, "You can measure a man's soul by what he laughs at." Unfortunately, we can't be sure at all what Bush et al are laughing at. It looks like Babs, Laura, and Shrub are all looking at Nancy, who's mouth is slightly open like she's beginning or finishing a sentence. It's well within the realm of plausibility that Nancy and the Bushies were talking, possibly about RR, and she said something humorous. I know plenty of old ladies who don't burst out laughing when they say something humorous.
Move on, nothing to see here....
