| Greetings from New York City! |
|
My battery is dead, but I borrowed my friend's laptop, so I'm connected for possibly two hours.
Lots and lots of pedestrians all over the place. Traffic is dying down in midtown Manhattan.
No real news. Any people who live in high-rise buildings where water is electrically pumped should fill pots, buckets, the bath tub, etc. with water.
Good luck to all. It's hot as hell.

Still, CA's recall's not as funny as a power outage. :silly:

It's hot as hell, and people are walking -- home, if they can.
Wait to hear from Nostamj. He has a fairly LONG walk home, esp. in this heat.

Never before was that a good thing.
Fewer cars on Lexington Avenue. Lack of traffic is causing eerie "quiet". Very nice.
Still lots of pedestrians, but not as densely packed as before. They're walking on the sidewalks and in the avenues. Everything moving slowly without traffic lights.
Hospitals have generators. The fire dept. was called for people stuck in tall bldg. elevators.
I don't know what time it started. I had just arrived home. It hit my living room before the traffic light. When I saw that, I scrambled for water.
In tall bldgs., water is electrically pumped. Water tower on roof, once drained will remain empty.
Took flashlight to friend's apt. to get his laptop. My battery is "non working", has been that way for a long time.
I would guess that this started around 4 p.m., but I don't know. A friend called from Florida to give me some news. I thought it was local. So many sirens, fire cars (not trucks) and ambulances to Grand Central made me think a fire there had closed down electricity to my neighborhood. Who knew?
I'll be coming back later for updates if I don't exhaust the battery.
P.S. Still hot as hell.

What's the saying? "You can't keep a good man down." Something like that. I'll last as long as my friend's battery lasts.
I guess I'll look into replacing my battery. Could come in handy, along with a transistor radio. :hi:

There's a 300 pound local kid wearing an orange vest and directing traffic on 5th Ave. He's drinking a beer discretely covered by a paper bag, and appears quite tanked.
Love NYC.
BTW - Stores here are closing down early. I'm out to the stoop to watch festivities.
