H.L. Mencken also said "Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people." Having truth and history our side wont'deter Huns.
There is NOTHING THES PEOPLE WON'T DO TO HOLD ONTO POWER.
And as far as having a stronger and more vocal opposition, who controls the media in this country? It's certainly not us.
I hate to sound pessimistic, but if we're going to beat them, let's hang onto the reality we're up against.

|
It is extremely important that we understand fully the nature of our enemy, which includes knowing to what extent they will go to stay in power.
I am not in full agreement on "who controls the media" in our country. Yes, our enemy owns Fox, etc. But we have the ability to use the media to our advantage. The potential is there, but we do not have the discipline. Just one example: if tonight on a right-wing site like this, one of the recognized leaders requested everyone to write a letter-to-the=editor of their local newspaper, thousands would do it. They could do it every Sunday night. In fact, they do. But we don't. We lack the discipline. We do not have the ability to get those simple L.T.T.E. out. That is one of the major reasons they "control" the media. Once we started doing LTTE, in a month people would understand the power of street theater. Monkey warefare. Grass roots media.
Finally, the Nazis could only be Nazis because the majority of the good and decent people lacked the discipline to be good and decent people. That is what pessimism does to people. Please be optimistic. We are going to win, though it will be hard. People will have to suffer and sadly die, until we reach the point where we develop that self-discipline needed to change this society.

however, letters to the editor won't do it.
There are thousands of us who write letters to the editor's on a regular basis. So what. They control cable TV. They control talk radio. (Hopefully Air America Radio will counter them to some degree, but not quickly enough to make a difference this year.) They control the majority of newspapers.
So please tell me how we break through. "Take back the Media" is making a valiant effort as are others and the liberal blogs are doing their best. But the bad guys still have the upper hand.
The only hope I have is that Seymour Hersh has whatever despicable photos may exist of child torture. It may take something of that magnitude to wake up even the thickest dullards in this country.
My biggest fear is that he'll make those photos public along with his latest article chronicling the depravity of BushCo, and that it still might not make any difference.
Sorry for the pessimism, but I won't sleep well until (and unless) Kerry wins and the criminals currently in charge are prosecuted for crimes against humanity.

just like they took over buildings on campus in the 60's. If the media does not serve the people it is time to take it back by whatever methods are necessary. I think this is the conclusion a lot of kids are going to come to when they start getting drafted by either bush or (sad to say) Kerry.

| 17. We have two realistic factors in play that were not in play at the time. |
|
To wit, we struggle against a tremendous apathy and high levels of pathological self-interest in the population in matters of power and politics. That is a negative.
And hardly without note, we have vastly improved methods of communicating at light speed and without regard to government- sanctioned broadcasts. Perfidy and duplicity are harder to hide from a world population in such close communication.
It is possible, in fact sooner or later probable, that some amount of the perfidy and duplicity will become embarrassingly public. And eventually, that will be something one cannot hide. That is a positive. Even Teflon loses it's finish in very high heat.

but public opinion has never responded to what viewpoint the media is presenting as much as the amount of the viewpoint's coverage.
Bush could be an axe murderer--if the media overwhelmingly glossed over it, public opinion would deem it acceptable.

We here at DU and at many internet political fora are especially interested in what goes on in the political world. But I'm convinced the vast majority of the American public suffers from that apathy and pathological self-interest that I mentioned.

| 10. Technically, they couldn't have "gotten" Oppenheimer... |
|
... since he left Germany (with his PhD) in 1929, before the Nazis came to power. He was of German ancestry, but American. Previously, he got his master's from Oxford, so we could as easily say the Brits lost him and we got him. *smile* Further, he was most worried about the rise of fascism in Germany, and that was part of his determination to work on the Manhattan project, so I don't think he was politically drawn to them at all.
As for the "end of civilization," I suspect it will go on, much less violently, in "old" Europe and elsewhere.

I said "to win we have to pin a sex scandel of any kind on Bush and then follow up with clear evidence that he is an abomination to the faith which his god blinded minions are so overly attached."
Unlike the 3rd Reich which tried to create a mythology with archeological evidence, the neocons merely usurp the Christian movement, sponsor the fundamentalist universities and hire their graduates to do what they are told.

| 27. Absolutely, HypnoToad. We always call ourselves civilized |
|
and we call our adversaries barbarians. They do the same.
The difference between civilization and law-of-the-jungle barbarism is that the former is an impractical ideal and the latter is just business as usual in this war-torn world.
There may not be entire continents, but there are some countries that never became fascist, and some that I respect as being much more civilized than ours. But there is no doubt that such countries consider us to be Nazis/fascists, and with good reason.
Einstein said that he regretted giving the atom bomb to a fascist country (us), but he had few options at the time.
And yet, and yet, Gandhi, who when asked what he thought of western civilization said he thought that it would be a great idea, showed that sometimes it is possible for civilized people who resist murderous barbarians to win a battle or two, if not the war.
I liked Derrick Jensen's book, "The Culture of Make Believe," because he talks to many people who take to heart the old saying that a lost cause is the only one worth fighting for.
