A lot of chatter about getting rid of the electoral college: a few months of talking head TV chatter, newspaper columns, scholarly publications, maybe a blue ribbon commission or two, and then it all peters out into nothing.
There is an institutional hurdle to getting rid of the EC: the small states. The big states, even Texas, might go along with it, but the EC enhances the clout of the small states in presidential elections, and they will not give that up easily. There are more than enough small states to block such a change to the Constitution.

Unless the winning margin is considerable, say 3% or more of the popular vote. If this is a close one absolutly no one will accept its legitimacy.

If Kerry wins the electoral vote but loses the popular vote.
I'm SO ready to tell my Republican friends to "get over it, Kerry won."

There will be a little chatter at first, but we will be told to get over it, and because America does what the teevee tells it to do, everyone will move on to the next big news story.
