| 10. Toronto is my hometown--it's very dark, but no chaos |
|
I just spoke to my parents who live there. There's no lights and they can see stars for the first time ever, but apparently people got home without any chaos or traffic disasters--random people just started directing traffic. Gas stations were out, which was a problem, but no looting or any of that.
According to www.globeandmail.com power starting coming back on to the suburbs by 9:30PM or so and the powers that be say everything should be fully restored by hmorning.

just in time for me to go to work. I drove from about 40 miles east of Rochester, NY into the city. Power all along the 2 lane highway I followed in, then none in the NE section of the city, then some at the major streets. Of course, they had power where I work. Isn't that always the way? I only got about 3 hours of sleep today, was awakened when the air conditioner in the bedroom stopped. A deafening silence! Gonna be a long night.

The Tigers won the World Series. During the riots, I remember waking up to the sound of a National Guard WWII Sherman Tank parked next to the Post Office down on the corner where I lived. We could smell smoke in our neighborhood and the local Kroger Supermarket was closed for three days. Neighbors, black and white were walking around the block with rifles. When the federal troops came everything seemed calm. Because of this experience, the next week I quit AROTC. My draft board sent me a welcome letter the next week. I stalled the draft board until the draft lottery was established. Just memories now...

about "looting" in Detroit? I ask because while I worked there (early 90s), there were often suppositions reported (there would be great rioting after the King verdict) that were never validated (the city was calm). Has made me forever skeptical of reports prior to verification - sometimes it is peoples assumptions of what they believe would/will happen (based on things likes riots of 35 years ago) rather than actual events.
