| Why Aren't Pro-Death Penalty Catholics threatened as well? |
|
with the denial of Communion? I'm not Catholic but it seems to me that the Roman Catholic Church is just as opposed to the death penalty as it is to abortion. It thus doesn't seem fair that Kerry should get threatened with denial of Communion, while Catholics like Antonin Scalia can oppose Church teaching with impunity when they support the death penalty.

The Catholic Church condemns abortion as murder of an unborn child. However, the death penalty is not strictly prohibited by the Catholic Church - it is viewed as a less desirable form of punishment, when there is no other "bloodless means" available to "defend human lives against an aggressor" - a loophole big enough to drive a truck through.
Which, much to my disappointment, provides Bush a major "in" with the republican Catholic crowd, many of whom call him "More Catholic Than Kerry". In fact, many single-issue ("Pro-Life is the Only Issue") Catholics are adamant in stating "Kerry is NOT Catholic", and are so gung-ho for Bush it's sickening.
But I'm still proud to be Catholic - and despise Bush and his puppet-masters.

The republicans get support from the catholic church (the perception) to cast a negative light on democratic members of congress and presidential candidates...
the catholic church (perception and reality) gets major PR support in promoting church doctrine as well flexing their muscles (control)
This marriage is pure politics and both are using the other for their own benefit...and I would imagine if it pays off, republicans will reward the obliging bishops in some manner.
