...and counterproductive.
Bush hasn't achieved the number of murders that Hitler did, but he is working on it. The comparison of the tactics used by the Third Reich and the Repukes is valid. (Instilling fear, unprovoked attacks on other countries, hysterical nationalism, de-humanizing those who are perceived as enemies, control of the media & use of blatant propaganda. Why is it "over the top" to discuss the similarities?
It seems very dangerous not to discuss them.

I'm not gonna get drawn into defending Bush, because I think what he is doing is evil. However, comparing what is going on in Iraq with what Hitler did in puposefully exterminating a race of people simply because of their religion, is in my opinion, disrespectful to those who suffered through the holocaust. Rather than elevating in the public eye, the violence going on in Iraq, it is going to diminish what happened under Hitler. Bush, as warped and simple minded as he is, is not attempting to eradicate a race of people.
It is also stupid because the vast majority of people realize this, and if this comparison is used by our side, the issue will be the comparison instead of the failed policy in Iraq. Every poll suggests our message of his failure is finally getting through. We should not distract from that by using the Hitler comparison. People will not accept it.

Although there are some comparisons with pre-war Germany and now in that the restrictions of freedom are inching their way in to our society, names lists of those who say not so nice things of the administration, and the like, it is a stretch to compare * with Hitler.

The war is based on bullshit. Bush is developing tactical nukes and he will use them if he can. Should we wait around till his numbers start to approach Hitler's before we are allowed to discuss the similarities between the two madmen?

There have been A LOT of wars based on bullshit. Just like this one. But you really need to read a little history to understand that unjust wars and methodical extermination of a race of people are two ENTIRELY different things. I am like the poster above who said they hate to be dragged into defending the scumbag, but even a cursory reading of history shows no true comparisons. The comparison is not only wrong and counter-productive, it is a slap in the face to those who lost loved ones in the Holocaust of Hitler's Germany.

I would have to agree with you - it is an insult to those who suffered under the third reich....however, in the early years of Hitler being in power, there was anti-semitism to be sure - but not death camps. And the nations that were invaded and occupied under Hitler were governed by puppet governments of that nation to quell dissent.
In the beginning with Poland - if we were to compare Hitler at that time to Bush now.....how far a stretch would it be? How do you think Hitler portrayed his military success with Poland to the German people???? How do you think he justified the invasion???

by some of the similarities between our country now and Germany during the rise of Hitler. But we do ourselves a disservice and dilute our message, I think, with hyperbole.

that's the key point. utter the name "hitler" and people zero in on the attempted genocide of jews, particularly the stepped-up efforts late in the war.
bush is not worse than that hitler, but then again, hitler himself, in the mid 1930s was also not worse than that hitler.
better to keep timelines consistent. is bush NOW better or worse than hitler was in 1937? i would say that hitler was worse, because the violence and repression had already started, as well as the impossible living conditions that led to pointless deaths, though not the gas chambers or ovens. hitler was also more effective in the sense that in 1937, he had a solid lock on power, and had effectively stifled resistance and protest. bush presides over a sharply divided country that is not at all solidly behind him.
bush is, however, far more DANGEROUS, because if he can retain power, he continues to rule the most powerful nation on the planet. hitler had a good deal of conquest yet to go before he could vie for such power.

That is an awful comparison. Hitler was, perhaps, the most dispicably evil ruler in the history of civilization. While they may share some of the same archtypes of poor leadership, there is no comparison. I'd say he's more of a Nero, anyway!
