Thanks to your quick response to our call to action, yesterday senators voted to overturn the global gag rule by adopting the Global Democracy Promotion Act in a vote of 53-43. Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) submitted the act as an amendment to the State Department Authorization Bill (S. 925).
In less than 24-hours more than 1,700 of you spoke out against the global gag rule by urging your senator to vote “yes” on the Boxer Amendment. As you know, the global gag rule interferes with effective family planning and reproductive health services, undermines HIV/AIDS prevention efforts, and endangers the lives and health of millions of individuals throughout the world.
The Senate vote is a resounding victory that signals to the White House that President Bush’s global war on women is an extremist, ideologically driven position that is out of step with mainstream America.
The House of Representatives version of this bill has yet to be considered, but we expect them to begin working on it next week. The House bill does not include any language on the global gag rule, but does contain an amendment that would restore funding to UNFPA. Click here to learn more about UNFPA.
