I think that what the re-thugs are trying to do is stop the protesters from protesting at their convention.

The BBC news said that if tons of people protest that Bush would be seen as a trouble maker. They said that if Bush ran in Europe or any foreign country that he would get about 3% of the vote and the other candidate would get 97%.

Bush has cried wolf so many times that this time it might be the real deal but why would they hit NY? Could it be that a bunch of groups want to make sure that Bush doesn't get a second term.

2. It's more than just a "distraction".

I have a trial, starting Monday morning, in a Manhattan courthouse only a few blocks from the site of the last attack. Although intellectually I know that the risk is small, it doesn't provide me with much calm or comfort. This is not an abstract or political issue for me, and I resent much more than I can express in words shrubco's use of fear as a tool. November can't come soon enough.

4. It depends on what you mean by "alright."

I don't know what impact the 9/11 attacks had on people who were outside the NYC area. Although I reside outside the city, I go in regularly for business and, less frequently than before, pleasure. The first attack effected me directly; I knew a couple of people who were killed, several people who lost family or friends, and many who walked home scared shitless and covered with soot, ashes and vaporized people. It is no longer an abstract issue when you can easily imagine that, on another day, you too could have suffered as miserable an end as the poor souls who were unlucky to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Since then, I am always aware and uncomfortable whenever I cross a bridge or tunnel, ride an elevator, am in a public space with a crowd; in short, I am left with a cross between paranoia and survivor's syndrome. It's not an abstract issue.
While I appreciate your sentiment in offering prayer, I can't say that it would do me any good. Once the confidence, faith and security you feel is taken from you, I don't know if it can ever be replaced. If prayer brings you comfort, please do so, but don't pray for me; pray for all of us. Contrary to the happy news you see on tv, NYC has been a semi armed DMZ for the last 3 years and I know that I'm not the only one who feels it.

I know folks who worked on the rescue effort, helped comfort the widows and orphans, and they are still shaken up. Hope all goes well at the trial.

5. I think what Bush and Co have done to this country is a crime.

They have people worried about an Arab under every bed, if he can get under their with out bumping into Ashcroft seeing what you are doing. But then we do get what we vote in.Even if I did not vote them in.

6. I have mixed feelings about the RNC in NYC & the terror alerts.

When the location was first announced months ago, I was thrilled that I could be here to protest and express my outrage against the * administration. And I will. As far as recent terrorist alerts go, I agree with Juniper. If I have to endure four more years and the ongoing legacy of this shit, then you might as well kill me now. (I’m paraphrasing or at least reinterpreting.)

However, I know a lot of Dem friends plan to be away that week. I can’t fault them. It is summer’s “last hurrah” for vacations. One of those friends even suggested that I stay away as my protest. I can appreciate that because the thought of the GOP cult convening in my city is repugnant. As we talked about it, we fantasized about our city shutting down. No beverages. No shopping. No cabs. No fabulous restaurants. No Broadway shows. No kinky sex. No NYC to enjoy and exploit in their false tribute to 9/11. I like that scenario, but it won’t happen. They have too much money to throw at our city. Still, I’d like to think that their currency is no good here because we’re not here to take it.

Oh well, it’s a nice fantasy. I can only hope that NYC will have a more inviting “free speech zone” than Boston. Maybe we’ll have another major power failure. Hmmm.

even if the threat is of their own devising? this is about scaring off protestors and about saying look at machoprez he is well hard. no terrorists will scare him away from new york! the protestors need to be there in force - then watch bush and his gang cower.

How is it going with the windows protest-the one that encourages all New Yorkers to put the slash W sign in their windows? I thought it was a good idea, as it could go on whether or not the protestors were curtailed.
