Real Time with Bill Maher - Friday Night

For those of you who missed the show - All I can say is WOW. The Repub, I believe it was David Drier (R) California, was totally outgunned by Michael Moore and Bill Maher. Bill Maher had to scold the audience to QUIT laughing out loud at Owens. It must have been a completely humiliating experience for Owens, because he walked off the stage. Moore was his usual no-holes barred self and the audience loved it. He got a very loud audience reaction when he came out - Maher said he didn't know that he had a rock star as a guest.

I know his show attracts probably mostly Dems and Liberals - but if the audience reaction is like this on other shows - the REPUBS are DONE.

Seeing drier leave the stage with his tail between his legs was great. I've never seen him so red faced.

and David Dreir deserved every bit of the humiliation since he dared to badmouth a movie (F911) without even seeing it. He did it to himself. :-)

7. It was a bad first episode in my opinion.

It's nice to see him back. But it could have been alot better. The Nader begging made me want to puke. And sorry, Bill was right to tell the obnoxious audience members to shut up for 2 seconds. I also thought Moore showed again that he should really stick to mostly filmmaking. He's often an ineffective debator because he's so anti-diplomatic and so eager to try and filibuster people. If he's the lone liberal, that's fine, but he had 2 other very effective liberals there with him against Drier.
Do I have some great admiration for Drier? No, but that isn't the point. He hurt his own credibility obviously when he admitted he hadn't seen F9-11, but the whole show was not about F9-11.

talking over him and hyperbolic screaming. It's why Moore get's called the Limbaugh of the left and not someone like Al Franken, who's so clearly more fair and usually therefor more effective(to people who aren't looking for preaching to the choire from either side) in a debate format.

30. I disagree. Al is a bad debater w/repubs because he always

gets screamed down. You can't make a point if no one ever hears it. Michael refuses to be screamed at w/o screaming back. It makes for a Jerry Springer like debate but that's the only way to get a word in edgewise w/these people.

The Dems have to show a spine and fight back and not let the repubs/media whores get away with what they do and say...Moore is one of the few guys on our side who does not back down and tells it like it is.....

10. I Don't Know if Bill was "right"

or not - but he gave the Repub far more respect than they've shown for any Dem. The show was great in many ways - one of which was Moore asking Drier to "name one lie" in the film and he couldn't because the dumbass hadn't seen it.

Second, the show was great because Bill asked Drier if he were President would HE have just sat for 7 minutes and done nothing on 9/11 - and his answer fell flat and he again looked like a dumbass.

Moore and Maher begging Nader was righteous. Nader was truly befudled and did not know exactly how to act except to laugh. They made their point - which was Nader takes away votes from Dems.

It was a hard-hitting show - and Michael Moore is BRILLIANT. A very intelligent witty guy with lots of guts.

17. It wasn't a bad show. Just underwhelming from what I"ve come to expect

of Real Time, particularly because it had been 6 months gone. And again, Drier did discredit himself, or was discredited, on the subject of F9-11, however that was not all they talked about and Moore never showed him the due dilligence I believe people should show someone who isn't a complete skunk. And as far as republicans go Drier is pretty serious in my opinion, and either among the most respectable or least disrespectable depending on one's level of thinking an R after your name = the devil.

19. Drier came off like

a baptist preacher to me - with his smugness and his audicity to claim he could convert Michael Moore to a Repub given the chance. Moore shot him down hard - by asking if his party would then label him a "flip flopper" for changing his mind. Drier was visibily pissed. Drier seemed like he was used to getting away with that line.

I don't have HBO so was at friend's house - and I was completely dumbfounded after seeing it - to me it was very hard-hitting - so much so Drier walked off - much like Bush*. I guess this is the new standard operating procedure - when it gets to hot - run, the chicken shits they all are.

I guess that's why we Dems are so diverse. I thought the show was the best I ever seen. The Nader begging was awesome. It cast Nader as an insensitive ego maniac.

Drier wimped out like all neo-cons when confronted by an aggressive progressive. What a cry baby.

8. We didn't see it until Saturday and I'm wondering if they edited

Drier walking off the stage. I had read about it and was watching for it. After Maher's "New Rules" segment, he was just gone! Those who saw it live, did they actually show him leaving and/or comment on it?

was based on the link RatTerrior posted. I shouldn't have left the impression that I actually saw him storm off with his tail between his legs. I assumed he did based on the fact that he got his ass handed to him and that he did exit the stage abruptly. Sorry 'bout that. :spank: He was red-faced though.

14. I watched it live and on DVR tape

I didn't notice that Drier had left initially but he did look like he was going to bolt (arms on chair like he was getting ready to jump up). My wife noticed that he was not in his seat and the former Canadian PM motioned to the empty seat.

I read on another thread that someone who was there had posted on his board that Drier did get up and leave as soon as possible (when Nader came on?).

21. I Wasn't So Impressed, Either

The staged groveling of Nader aside (hopefully politics isn't so bitter that friends turn to bitter enemies and I suspect all three enjoy a good tete-tete)...the show verged on the "left-wing" hated fest we so criticize Faux for.

Mahrer came out swinging...and the audience was loaded for bear as well (anyone know if Mahrer does his own warm up???)...this was a highly partisan crowd that, if you look at if from the other side, was just shy of pitchforks and torches. Drier walked into the equivelent of O'Reilly's "Spin Zone". It was almost painful to see this goon get so beat up on.

For those who need a good dose of red meat, the show was wonderful and worth taping and watching over and over. Moore was great in his taking Drier and turning this sleezeball inside out. One great highlight was when Drier tried to claim F911 was based on lies which Moore did a marvelous Wallace Berry slow burn...and then asked Drier if he saw the movie...of course Drier said "No"...it went downhill from there. Even Kim Campbell...former Canadian PM (I love that lady) tried to play referee and got pissed with both Drier's spinning and Owens fake sincerity.

We saw the repeat and Drier stuck around until Mahrer did his New Rules and when the final credits were shown he was gone. In honestly, so was Nader...who was also on the set before the scene change, and I've seen other Mahrer guests exit early as well. I give Drier guts for coming in and being such a good clay pidgeon.

Again, for those who like it raw and direct, no one hits it harder these days than Mahrer...but there are times he'll miss the mark (a very lame Ted Kennedy joke in there) or not quite have his facts in the right places. But when he's on target, he's like a fine blade.

I hear he'll be having Carlin on in weeks ahead...I'm wondering if any Repugnicans will dare come on.

25. Red Meat

I like having red meat a few times a week.

The thing to focus on here is it is a "comedy" show first.

I thought the former Candadian PM's remarks to Nadar really hit home. I wonder if he was listening.

He did complain a few weeks ago on Larry King, bemoaning the fact the it was hard to get conservatives to do his show.

24. The most interesting thing I notice about the show...

was at the end of the show both Michael Moore and the former PM (?)of Canada were there but the republican had left the stage. It appears that the repugs can dish it out but they sure can't take the heat!

You had two hardcore liberals a 'moderate' who ended up siding with the liberals and an ineffectual or perhaps just ineffective conservative. It was like watching any given show on fox, except instead of a liberal constantly being prodded interrupted pestered and insulted, it was a conservative. Oh and Bill Maher doesn't pretend that he is fair and balanced, so there's that difference as well. Overall I enjoyed it though I felt they did get offtrack at times and didn't effectively rebuff all the bile. Also the Nader thing was pretty stomach turning, but what can you do?
