Anyone else find it so? The Pope trying to stuff feminists back into the 19th century, Bob Dole wishing to muzzle Heinz-Kerry, and the anti-THK stuff in general. It's quite depressing to have it out in the open like that. Sabriel

times because we are in the 21st century... these people are proving her correct. The Catholic church is just amazing.... They are going to lose their base. The ultra-conservatives are mostly gone already. The normal people will leave after this type of statement. Or just say 'screw you' and pretend they never heard. (that is what many Catholic women do with the contraception issue).

That's Protestant thinking. Any self-respecting Protestant disagreeing with his/her church will split off and form a new sect. Catholics who disagree with the Church on abortion and birth control figure that a 2000 year old institution that has room for both Torquemada and Francis Assisi, the Borgia Popes and John the 23rd, Hildegard of Bingen and Kramer/Sprenger, probably has room for them too. Or as one pro-choice Catholic once said "The Pope can't tell me I'm not Catholic, any more than he can tell me I'm not Italian."

| 2. I agree . I am currently reading a book by Carmen Bin Laden |
|
about her life in Saudi Arabia after marrying into the Bin Laden family. She describes the repressive way that women are treated in Saudi Arabia and likens that treatment and the country as the Taliban with money.
When religion and politics are the rule of the land and intertwined we will have the attitudes of the dark ages thrust upon us once again.
It is quite sobering knowing that Bush panders to the religious right, cozies up to the House of Saud and was recently in Rome in a session with the Pope who suddenly makes this statement about women. Now the Repugs are vilifying Theresea as they did Hillary and are working to rollback the abortion laws.
Scary!!!

I know there's some evidence that jr-hi, hi, and college girls/women can do better work if they're not trying to look cute and feminine and non-threatening to the guys in the class.
But there is also the strong possibility that the curriculum could become gender-specific......no physics, calculus, etc in the girls schools.
I think the split jr-hi Catholic schools in St. John's, Nfld, Canada, in the mid-70s had less demanding courses for the girls than the boys. At least, that's what I remember hearing.

It seems that with role models such as Laura and Lynn in the White House (who don't have an opinion on anything), anyone who comes along with an opinion is viewed as outrageous by others who listen to them.
No one criticizes Laura Bush because she hasn't said anything outside of how great W is in years. THK gets blasted because she stands up for herself.
I'm from Pittsburgh and know there is a lot of history between THK and the media here as well as the republican machine. They dislike her because she said she couldn't recognize the republican party any more and didn't know what they stood for. As a result there are a few people who are angry with her for jumping ship.
The Catholic Church is another story - but it lends credence to what bush and his gang have been saying for a while - there's no room for smart women in my house.

I was THERE-there were definitely over a million people. Many, many women of all ages, along with their men and families. Press coverage was ho hum. I couldn't believe it, but I guess I should have known. BUT we're out there...at LEAST 1.2 million strong and we have ENERGY! HA

And have supper on the table by 6:00 sharp!
Isn't it amazing how they want to put "their" repuke women on a pedastal and lavish them with phoney praise and say they're the "better half." Yet they spew such vile contempt for strong liberal women.
I think what sickens me the most is the females on TV who make a lot of money and go along with this hatred of non-Stepford women. Talk about sell-outs.

But yes, the anti-women tone of the media is VERY disturbing. Makes me sick. :puke:

Of course, here it's more subtle, and certainly not everyone engages, but there is, IMHO, substantial sexism.
Just yesterday, someone posted something about "Democrats with stones" as being the ones with courage. I replied that I thought equating courage with testicles was sexist, and of course I was accused of engaging in rampant PC-ism. I didn't pursue it, it wasn't worthwhile, but it still stung.
Wimps are "pussies," and the reference isn't to small cats. Bravery is "having cojones." No one says, "It takes a Dem with ovaries to stand up to that kind of shit" or "When are the Dems gonna grow some tits and quit wimping out to these assholes?"
But of coursse, I'm not Teresa Heinz Kerry so I guess I just have to shut up and take it from the macho boys on DU.
Because I'm just

Yes, sexism is alive and well at DU, and fights break out and are hushed up, and it simmers underneath for awhile, then erupts again.
I've said many times that this is the same stuff we were battling during the anti-Vietnam War protests, and it's VERY depressing to be fighting it again.
Doesn't seem to matter much, though.

I am amazed and shocked at the recent attacks on Teresa Heinz Kerry. What century are these people living in? There was a slogan in the 1970's "You've Come A Long Way, Baby" that refereed to the advancement of women. Sadly it looks like "You've Still Gotta Long Way, Baby". Ronny K. Marshall

I hear rascist and sexist remarks everyday up here in PA, at work, at home, from my 'liberal' friends, and sometimes from the objects of the statements themselves.
This country seems to be reverting in everyway, for everybody, except the ultra rich.
The only thing that suprises me is that they haven't been riding Elizabeth in the media about her weight half as much as I have been expecting, and I am very happy about that. I'm sure this will change soon anyways.
We need to get back on the right path, I'm just not sure where the hell that is.

Senator Dole,
I believe you owe Teresa Heinz and the women of America an apology. Your comment on MSNBC, "There's not a muzzle big enough to silence Teresa Heinz Kerry" was degrading and offensive. I imagine your wife, who is very outspoken herself, might even agree with me. Your comment was uncalled for, and you should be ashamed of yourself.
