I am so pissed about the K of C thing that I can hardly see straight! :grr:

Catholics. Not true of the many of us who don't attend Church regularly or who are pro choice, pro birth control and against discriminating against gays as well as other social issues. Catholics are often all lumped into one "devout" group but the fact is many of us don't agree with a lot of the official positions of the Pope and the Church. In one recent poll (I don't remember which one---maybe zogby?) Catholics were actually much more in support of Kerry. We'll see I guess. A lot of Catholics are no different from Protestants who don't go around screaming bible verses and acting like nuts.

Wingnut to me are the very, very "devout" who believe in the bible in literal terms, believe everything the Pope says, don't believe in birth control, don't believe in women's rights or in gay rights, etc. Most of these people go to church regularly. That's why I said that. Sorry if I offended you. Of course a lot of moderate ones also go to church and don't practice everything the Church says you should.

maybe not as many as last election, but sadly an overwhelming majority. One of the above posters nails it, abortion and gay rights are the two most important issues that exist in most Catholic's minds.

6. I respectfully nailed my Catholic friend this week

He can't defend Bush on anything, BUT he says he's still going to vote for him because of the abortion issue. He said that as a Catholic, he wants to follow the teachings of his faith. I said, "Gosh, I guess you've had to make a personal compromise, then, to continue to support Bush on the war, since the Pope is against it. That must be difficult for you." My friend had nothing to say in response, because I nailed him on his hypocrisy. I swear to you that my friend is so decent in every respect, I always tell him that he's in the wrong party... these one-issue voters are so blind. There are some decent people who are voting for Bush simply because they are blind, and we need to get them to open their eyes.

If Kerry does well enough among Catholics (as in a higher margin than Gore got), Kerry will very likely win. Catholics are a swing group if I remember correctly.

For Catholics who wondered how their faith should influence their vote? I seem to remember he recommended all the Church teachings should be considered, not just one. Here's an incomplete list:

* Against Abortion

* Against Capital Punishment

* Against Starting Wars

* For Social Justice

Of course, many Catholics won't vote for Bush simply because they think he's a creep. I mean, they're just people!

I mean, how often is it that a candidate from the largest single denomination in the US is a candidate for President? JFK was the last one, and it was Al Smith before that.

Catholic candidates just don't come around often.

She seldom misses mass and believes strongly in the basic tenets of the church. However, she does have a few disagreements, such as choice, birth control, women's rights, etc. Just like any number of Catholics who the church deny exist.

Methinks that, if the puglycans are counting on the Catholic vote to win them this election, they are in for an unpleasant awakening.
