| Is there anything that money cannot buy ? |
|
With the world falling apart around him, George W Bush is galavanting around the country raising money for his re-selection. He truly believes that money can buy anything...and perhaps he is right. He put a price on the heads of Uday and Qusay and money won. He has a price on the head of Saddam, also. Come to think of it, he has a price on the head of Osama and Mullah Omar, too. And he has price on the head of America...
No matter the condition of the economy or how many young Americans are losing their lives in the wars, he has all the confidence in the world his money will win in the end. Perhaps he is right? And perhaps he is wrong??

...Wealthy people aren't necessarily happy and happy people aren't necessarily wealthy, but to quote (I forget...possibly Mae West?) "I've been rich and I've been poor and, believe me, rich is better."

There are many different attributions for "I've been rich and I've been poor and, (honey/believe me), rich is (definitely) better."
Pearl Bailey W.C. Fields Zsa Zsa Gabor Joe E. Lewis Sophie Tucker Mae West
And the actual source is..... according to documents uncovered by the good people at alt.quotations.... the Last of the Red Hot Mamas herself.... Sophie Tucker.
Betcha they all cribbed from her, except Lewis, who said something related but not similar.

Money cannot buy life. No matter how much money one has
they die. Sooner or later. God made it so.
I guess.

You cannot buy the human spirit anymore than you can own the sky or the rivers or the lands on which we walk or the vast wine-dark sea. He thinks he can buy everything, but he cannot buy the human spirit, he cannot buy confidence, and that will lead to his downfall more than anything else.

But anything money can't buy can be taken away with money.
money can't buy love? Maybe so. But with enough money you can make sure that no one else has love that endures, or love that doesn't only turn into pain.

|

Nurturing one's conscience and acting on it are not very lucrative ways to spend one's time, for example. In fact, doing so seems to work against financial gain.
This dichotomy is not new, of course. Jesus asked about the value of gaining the world while losing your soul (which I interpret as one's conscience/humanity/divine spark, or whatever you want to call it). He said we need to have faith like a mustard seed, which starts out as a tiny thing but, with care and nurturing becomes one of the largest, deeply rooted plants around. That's what the life of the soul is to me; its potential is inside us all but it remains very small unless we give it the time and care it needs to fully develop into its full potential.
Of course, how can you put a price tag on that, so why bother? :evilfrown:

| 25. Money is applied energy |
|
Money only has as much value as humanity allows. It is an illusion given power through belief. We are given these pieces of paper with historical images and esoteric symbols to go and control our material destinies. Rather than control, many people instead give money itself the power to shape and mold.
To George W. Bush, money is a satanic principle. Money equals raw power, which he can channel into soures. Most people believe he is right, and this is the triumph of Satan. No longer is the soul of man powerful. No longer can love be the guiding principle which shapes our actions. Compassion is seen as a dilution of the power craving.
The devil is the tester, he who tempts with lies. That is his only function. Replace Jesus in the desert with George W. Bush. Dubya is confronted by Satan, who says, 'I can give you rulership over the earth." Dubya says, "Okay!" Satan says, "I can turn these mountains into bread by your command." Dubya says, "Right on!" Satan says, "I will force everyone to be obedient to your authority." Dubya says, "Excellent!" What is the difference between Dubya and the devil if he agrees to every temptation thrown in his path by this unconscious force?
This is what we are up against, a mythic power-monger. An anti-philosopher king. This is what we as a society have asked for and allowed to happen, and now we must deal with the consequences by changing ourselves to the OPPOSITE of his example. We must deny the very temptations he has accepted. We must promise ourselves to find strength and joy in that which CAN NOT be purchased. Love, compassion, equanimity, and bliss. The four bottomless minds. Money can purchase none of these things, and they can be cultivated for free.
How can something which existed before currency somehow be brought under its control?

Moreso than God, I think Dubya worships money and the power that money can bring. And he is expert at using it... When asked at a news conference what he would do with so much money, Dubya said, "Watch me!"

|
Edited on Sat Aug-23-03 11:57 AM by Solly Mack
You don't need "class" or integrity when money makes people overlook or forget you have neither.
In a society that hungers for name brands and the latest novelty is to die for (or you're nothing)...then all money has to do is buy people.
Money shapes the way people think..who they are, what they are...
Just look at how poor people are talked about....
If money didn't hold a psychological value for many, poor people would not be dirted the way they've been.
Ultimately, money can't buy a good many things...but it doesn't have to...it can purchase the illusion and that's pretty much all it needs to do in this country.
I find Chucklenuts to be the basest type of person....but this society feeds the very thing that props people like the Bush's up...
that money is the end all and be all....society changes it's thinking, and people like the Bush's will be clearly seen for what they are
