It's just very Republican, and a major component of the Right-Wing Echo Chamber.

Pretending like it's on the bleeding edge of the news. Problem is, when you do that kind of stuff you end up being wrong more often than you're right. Which is SludgeReport in a nutshell.

He gets leaked stories before they've been independantly verified. This used to be an important journalistic standard. If you read All The President's Men by Woodward and Bernstien, one thing you'll notice is the lengths they have to go to do that before they print the story.

|
He just sits around waiting for things to drop into his lap from the Bush team or any one of a dozen right wing stink thanks, and he puts the stuff on his website.
He's gotten pretty badly burned with a lot of that stuff, but it hasn't encouraged him to try fact checking. He's about as reliable as the National Enquirer. Sometimes they get it right. Mostly, they don't.

Matt's periodic Drudgery falls into the category of "blogging" -- his web site being a Web log. This form of e-Franklinesque dissemination of news/information/opinion (however slanted it may be ideologically) has been brought to an art form by Drudge. His blend of journalistic technique/gossip/speculation draws in the reader as a bee to clover blossoms. Unlike, say, the Weekly Word News, he never intentionally fabricates a story.
That such bloggers have been welcomed as certified news-gatherers/reporters to the recent Democrat nominating convention tells me that this growing community of gatherers-expressors is here to stay -- a welcome development in our news-media fixated culture.

there is no such thing as an accredited periodical or website.
Many republicans think Drudge is reliable because he has been 'first' to 'break' several stories.
The problem is that when you go back even a couple days latter and especily if you wait a whoping week or so most of those same stories turn out to be bunk. In the cases where they aren't Drudge often gets large sections wrong, and/or blows things way out of proportion.
I would equate it to siting a post on someones blog. If theres a link to a reliable sorce... Asume they are quoting selectively. Check google and see what other sorces have to say. If not... Its probobly not worth your time to debunk.
You can probobly find a list of stuff drudge got seriously burnt on with a quick search.
No serious person would take anything from his site as evidence of anything. Just as you woulden't claim that just because someone said it on DU it must be true.

Excuse me while I try to control myself. I've told this before, but it must be said again. I ran into the Drudge Report when it first began. It was mainly a rehash of what was going on in the world from that little sicko freak's point of view.
He got lucky. He found out a story that other reporters were also following. They didn't run the story because they were professional, and wanted to be sure they had a creditable source. Drudge on the other hand has no idea what it means to be a professional, so he broke the Clinton Sex Scandal.
I guess I can't blame him for all the stupidity that followed. I mean....it is O.K. for the Reagan White House to sell arms to our enemies, then turn the money over to the Contras of Nicaragua EVEN if it was against the law. There is no massive investigation of Bush, even though he lied to us about what was going on in Iraq. BUT by darn, let the President of the U.S. lied about a BJ, and all hell breaks out.
Anyway, back to Drudge. Let's say I knew him when everybody wanted him to stop spamming all the Usenet Groups with his Sludge Report. I have to admit we had a great time poking fun at the absurdities he wrote. My all time favorite is that "women lactate over Joey Lawrence."
I know I'm being hard on him, but his 15 minutes of fame should be over by now. I can't help but wonder how self-loathing a person must be to be a conservative Republican and also be gay. It seems like such a contradiction in terms. Drudge is it all the fame? How can you do this to yourself? (just in case he is reading) :hippie:

|
Which is why I've bookmarked it.
Don't forget to use his "hot tip" box to send messages to remind him to publish corrections whenever the latest Kerry "scandal" collapses.
Just don't expect the "journalist" to follow through. He hasn't done so with Kerry's so-called affair or the Swift-Boat liars. And today he's suggesting that THK financially supports terrorists.

He had gossip, but most of it was his commentary on movies and people. I frequented alt.showbiz.gossip in those days because there were some really great people there. He didn't just post his sludge report in our group, he spammed it to many groups. What you've said sounds about right, but gossip...well not so much as everything as Drudge sees it. What he wrote about the movie BABE had flame bait written all over it. I have to give him some credit. If he read what everyone said about his sludge report, yet still have the guts to keep writing it....but then...it was pretty bad. I haven't read much of it for years. :hippie:
