Why do some conservatives seem to think liberals hate Jews?

I read Ann Coulter's book "Slander." She spends several pages talking about how liberals hate Jews. I have never, {i]never met an anti-semitic liberl. I have met some people who are a little ignorant, but never anti-semitic. The anti-semites I've run into are all right-wingers.

Another point: if liberals hate Jews as much as Coutler says, why are so many Jews liberals?

I think it's two-fold:

1. It's mostly liberals who criticize America's policies on Israel.
2. Most conservative Christians are supporters of Israel, calling Jews "God's Chosen People." They neglect to mention that they support Israel because they want it to exist so it can be annihilated in the battle of Armageddon. :eyes:

Of course, there are liberals who are pro-Israel, and frankly, while I myself am quite pro-Palestinian (I like to think myself more balanced), many of my pro-Israel friends are themselves relatively balanced. We may disagree about many of the actions of the Israeli govt. today (in fact, many of them think Sharon's too hardline) or about the historical context, but most of us support a two-state solution.

The thing is right-wingers assume any criticism of Israel is antisemitism.

The first is basically what the earlier poster called projection. Conservatives know that they've always hated Jews (who was always lumped together with the communists? It wasn't the WASPs, that's for sure....), and they know that the educated people know that. So, they decided to keep saying the left is anti-Semitic, knowing that the same idiots who believe deserters and draft dodgers have a greater respect for our armed services will eventually come to believe it. (Yet, in the same breath they'll rant an rave about the left being in love with Karl Marx; you remember him, that blond-haired, blue-eyed, perfect Aryan...)

Yes, liberals are tougher on Israel; we actually have so much respect for the Israeli people that we hold them to a higher standard, for we know they are capable of reaching it. The Israelis have been exposed to western democracy and the Enlightenment--their actions should reflect that. (This is the same reason "Liberals Hate America"). On the other hand, the Palestinians have been kept in the dark for centuries, and now they are treated like dogs and herded like sheep into refugee camps--I'm therefore willing to be more forgiving if they react less humanely.

Conservatives continue their deflection by pointing to our criticisms as hatred of Jews, but this is again just to keep their ignorant followers from understanding that the reason Conservatives are rabidly pro-Israel is hardly laudable: the Fundamentalist Christians want to protect the state of Israel so Jesus will return, send the Jews to Hell, and take the Christians to Heaven; the other ones just want to see the complete annihilation of the Palestinian people. The latter is largely made up of the Jewish conservatives, who are willing to ally themselves with the Christian Fundies because they'll help them kill Palestinians. (Enemy of my enemy is my friend... even if that friend wants to see me burn in Hell.)

Terrorism is still terrorism whether it comes in the from a bomb strapped to the chest or in the from of a smart bomb aimed at civilians. It's terrorism when a independent faction does it and its terrorism when the military of a government does it.

It is our failure to unquestioningly, blindly support the nation of Israel and its illegal occupation that gets us the brand "anti-Semitic."
