I really don't see him being deified as was Saint Raygun. Some combination of Hoover and Nixon seem likely. Both men where not in the political limelight following their retirements.

If Bush loses close, I think there will be another candidate coming out of the right wing to hold the GOP. But if Kerry pulls away, look out, that means it is going to have a huge battle, and there's every possibility of a paleocon gaining the party reins. I can't imagine Frist getting much support nationwide. He has the personality of an iguana, and he represents the only special interest hated more than lawyers.
