United to cancel pension programs


So, what about the retirees? I know some steel companies have done this. Does the Federal government back this up like the FDIC?
Why would anyone solely rely on a company pension if this can happen? I know many people do quite well with company pension, but I would rather have my own retirement IRA and diversify it to the hilt.
