| Mark Thatcher 'was planning Texas move' |
|
Thursday August 26, 2004
Sir Mark Thatcher was planning a move from South Africa to Texas when he was arrested over the alleged involvement in a coup plot, a South African prosecutor said today.
Margaret Thatcher's son was under house arrest today and facing the possibility of 15 years in jail after being accused over an alleged plot to overthrow the government of oil-rich Equatorial Guinea. The 51-year-old, who denies the charge, was arrested early yesterday at his Cape Town home and appeared in court in the city later that day.
Today Makhosini Nkosi, a spokesman for the National Prosecuting Authority, said: "It does appear that he was planning to leave the country. The house was on the market, he had disposed of some of the cars, and there were suitcases around the house which indicated they were planning to leave. He did confirm he was planning to relocate to Texas." http://www.guardian.co.uk/southafrica/story/0,13262,1291460,00.html

| 5. It's a hereditary baronetcy |
|
Major gave it to Denis: http://politics.guardian.co.uk/constitution/story/0,9061,1221168,00.htmlHowever, he admitted he had made Mr Thatcher a baronet - a hereditary honour not awarded for more than 20 years and which has now passed to his son Mark - In response to "powerful representations".
He refused to be drawn on whether one of those had come from his predecessor as prime minister, saying simply: "There were a series of very powerful arguments that were put to me at the time. I am sure you would not wish me to go into detail," he said.

| 7. Somehow I imagine the 'powerful argument' going like this: |
|
"Look, Major, you remember that affair you had with Edwina Curry? Yes, of course I knew about it, I was the Prime Minister. Now, if you don't give Denis something hereditary, that'll be on the front page of The Sun tomorrow. God knows, this is the only way my idiot son is going to get a title."
