10. The "party of Lincoln" never was

Lincoln was used by the radical elements in his party to defeat the South. After that was accomplished, he was no longer useful to them, and they (most likely Edwin Stanton) had him bumped off. (Very convenient that Booth turned up burned to a crisp in a barn, and that his "co-conspirators" were given the quintessential kangaroo trial and hanged without being allowed to speak). With Lincoln out of the way, they set upon their plan for domination of the South and the economy. When one of their hand-picked "Presidents" (like Hayes, Garfield or Arthur) got too independent, they were quickly abandoned (or shot, in the case of Garfield). It's interesting to note that the popular Republican renegade Teddy Roosevelt was also shot (but not killed) when he ran against the party's hand-picked candidate, William Taft, in 1912.
