House Votes to Block New Overtime Rules

WASHINGTON (AP) -

In a sharp rebuke of a new administration policy, the House moved Thursday to block the Labor Department from carrying out overtime rules that critics argued could deprive millions of workers of their overtime pay.

The 223-193 vote in favor of blocking the rules defied the White House. A threatened veto applied to a massive spending bill, now on the House floor, if it contains any language tampering with the rules that took effect Aug. 23.

"This is one step in the legislative process. We are continuing to work with the Congress," said Trent Duffy, a spokesman for President Bush.

Democrats, united against the rules, were joined by 22 Republicans in voting for the amendment to a $142.5 billion health and education spending bill.

2. Given that it was a decision that was taken by the...

...appointed administrators of the U.S. Labor Department and not a change brought about by law makers in Congress, I think this was a charade orchestrated by the White House with republican congress to make the rethugs look good. Dubya will now come out and praise the acute eyes of congress and suggest that at the last minute when it became obvious what was going on the saved overtime for working Americans. The Big Lie once again.

if they blocked his new overtime rules. It's kind of hard to make that look good.

5. House did NOT block new overtime rules

They voted to overturn the administrative rules- but they still need the Senate to even force a Bush veto.

People are making a lot of hay over this, but it's essentially meaningless. Of course, what it does tell you though is how much power Kerry could have (and Clinton did have and WASTED through his corporate pandering).

It takes a veto proof majoity to overturn an administrative rule-- like, ahem- the Fairness Doctrine....
