I remember the interview and Jon saying that there should not have been time spent on a group that was lying and giving equal weight to their phoney arguments. Kopel said something about the fact of their existance was news and that truth would level things out over time. I know that's not all or exactly what he said and I would like to read it.

| 4. He kept saying "facts" vs. "truth". It was a "fact" that some Vietnam |
|
vets were challenging Kerry's war record. That was news and they were reporting it. The "truth" dealt with whether their charges were true or not.
JS wanted the Media to report the truth and Koppel was talking about how they were reporting the fact that it occurred and the truth will catch up eventually.
The "truth" seems to be getting lost in all the reporting on this Administration. They use the fact that the Media will report what they say as news and no one will be paying attention when (or if)the truth ever bothers to come out.

The interview portion that stuck with me was when Jon Challenged the Koppel (and the media) to report the truth.
Koppell said that Jon is getting confused between the facts and the truth.
Koppel (paraphrasing): "If President Bush said 'Koppel is a pedophile' and the next day the media said 'The president said Koppel is a pedophile' then the media is reporting the facts. The facts may not be true, but the fact is the president did say that."
This stuck with me because Koppel basically gave the media a free pass to promote lies. He forgot to add "But the media needs to follow up with 'The president used to support his statement evidence from xyz'. The media can report the facts, but it is also their job to verify the facts given to them by ANY SOURCE are accurate. Not doing so is being lazy half-assed Bush Kissers.

It's amazing to confront the amazing blindness of the talking heads. It's evident from their actions and words, but to hear them articulate it is truly amazing.

| 6. Exactly. Your paraphased quote nails Koppel's spin. |
|
Koppel was definitely trying to cover his and the rest of the media's collective arse.

Here's the section mentioned in earleier posts:
TED KOPPEL: (Off Camera) I think you're arguing about the difference between fact and truth. Which is the great problem with journalism. Let me explain.
JON STEWART: Fact and truth?
TED KOPPEL: (Off Camera) Fact and truth.
JON STEWART: Are you going to tell me the Holocaust didn't happen?
TED KOPPEL: (Off Camera) For the sake of -argument, let's say President Bush comes out there Thursday night and out of the blue talks about that well-known drug dealer and pedophile, Ted Koppel. And my colleagues then ...
JON STEWART: Are you getting this?
TED KOPPEL: (Off Camera) And my colleagues then the next morning say the President of the United States last night, in a surprising diversion from the rest of his speech, accused ABC host Ted Koppel of being a pedophile and a drug dealer. Are they factually correct in reporting that the President of the United States said that? Is it news that he said that? Sure, it is. Is it the truth? No. The truth may not emerge until ...
JON STEWART: Or is it?
-snip-
JON STEWART: But they're explaining the vulnerability in the system. What I'm saying is ...
TED KOPPEL: (Off Camera) That's exactly right.
JON STEWART: This vulnerability in the system needs to be for the media, I think, to do an effective job, that vulnerability needs to be corrected. The media is getting creamed, and they need to take a more active role in safeguarding, I think, the public trust.

I also found I could order it for $15. No thanks!
Jon is such an optimist.
I'd be interesting in the rest of the interview, too, but I thank you again for the outtake.
