| Holy crap...Daily Show was weirdly good tonight |
|
First, Back in Black finished in dead silence. Not because it was bad, but because the audience was in utter shock. (Lewis was highlighting the existence of silver coins featuring the WTC on one side and Freedom Tower on the other, made from silver found in a vault discovered underneath the rubble.)
Secondly, Pat Buchanan and I agree wholeheartedly on something: Iraq.
That almost scares me, considering what he (at least I think it was him) said after 9/11. But Pat, for all that he's a hardcore fundie, seems uncommonly astute about political realities. (I.e., in November 2000, he said, 'No way did all those Jews vote for me.')
Surrealer and surrealer.

He told Buchannan that Kerry was just just 1 vote out of 100 Senators and you can't blame only Kerry for the Iraq war instead of the "guy driving the bus" (Bush & Co.). Pat didn't go there again after that.

Not in a bad way. Its just amazing those things exist. Not amazing...sad. Its too bad they don't have hours to spend interviewing the people that thought those items were a good idea.
As for Buchanan... I was canvassing with some other volunteers last weekend and the old timers were talking about when they lost total faith in the repugs. Iran/Contra. Watergate. Ken Starr. The usual list. For one person it was Buchanan's speech at H.W.B.'s convention. I pointed out that Buchanan was an insane radical back then, and now he is a moderate. We all agreed that Buchanan is insane, but at least he is consistent. WAY TO GO PAT!

|
I'm surprised that nobody said anything about the contrast between "Valor the Eagle" and Black's alternative, "Cowie the Self-Wetting Cat".
Lewis Black was certainly walking the tightrope between "black humor" and complete tastelessness tonight. And to be honest, that is when comedy is often at its best -- when it forces you to laugh at the things in life that are the most tasteless and disgusting.
I thought his last statement -- "Thank GOD they saved the SILVER!" -- was dead-on, albeit dripping in sarcasm. I think the audience was just so damned stunned by it all by that point, that they almost forgot to laugh. But Lewis got it back when he stood up as if to take on the audience.
I'm sorry I missed the Buchanan interview, but I've heard Pat enough times to know his deal by now. He says a few things that make you think he's sane, and then he goes off the deep end again. I'll give him credit for consistency and honesty, but I'll never fall for the idea that he's some kind of moderate -- he's ultra-conservative, just in an old-school way.

That the IWR gave to Bush. You can nuance it all you want, but Congress abdicated its responsibility. If they were itching for a war, then they should have formally declared one, period. I don't like giving the Executive branch so much latitude. This Congress, Republicans and Democrats alike, and repeatedly rolled over to the Executive Branch, continually abdicating their oversight responsibilities. That is not a good thing, no matter who is in the White House.

I didn't see the segment, but those coins are utter crap.
The commercial says they are governemnt issue, but briefly states the governemnt ins N. Marshall Islands. Then they talk about the purity of the silver -- but then say it is clad.
So basically, you have a small layer of silver over a piece of something cheap(probably zinc) issued by a foreign country to sell to U.S. citizens at a high price who think that someday the coins will be worth something.
On top of that, the obvwersse and reverse are tacky.
I am guessing Freepers are the target market.

He is self-consistent which is always honorable, though his bubble-universe scares the bejeezus out of me. He is one of those people I can agree to respectfully disagree with. When he was on Crossfire, I always felt he laid out cogent arguments, never got shrill, and was willing to stick with the bigger concepts instead of getting caught up in the petty details.
I used to have a similar respect for Bob Dole and John McCain. Sadly, all the respectable conservatives prefer whoring themselves to BFEE instead of standing up for what is right.
Let's face it, when you have someone like Pat saying 'I thought Ted Kennedy was right...' we live in a fucked up time.

Just think, we wouldn't be in this Bizarro World that we're in now, if those stupid ballots had not been screwed up.

Buchanan made several good points (O, lordy, never, ever thought I could think that, much less put it in writing!) but he made at least one lame argument. He railed against the total failure of Bush and his war but keeps turning around and saying he will vote for him. All he has against Kerry, apparently, is that Kerry voted for the war. Stewart kept telling him he voted to give the authority - hence the big stick analogy - so negotiations could be done. Then Buchanan came back with, "Yes, but he said he would vote for it again knowing what he now knows about no WMDs, etc."
What is the rational by Kerry for that statement? He is getting beat over the head with it ad infinitum - and even at the risk of incurring the "flip flop" gods - he needs to explain that answer.
